Role Overview

Mirai is seeking a Senior UI/UX Designer (Design Systems) to join its Generative AI team in Riyadh. This full-time position is central to establishing a cohesive and scalable design function for web and mobile AI products. The role requires a designer who can both craft user experiences and build the underlying design systems that enable rapid, consistent product development.

The Challenge and Opportunity

Currently, design decisions within the Generative AI team are often made by engineers, leading to inconsistencies across products. This role addresses that challenge by taking ownership of the design process from conception to implementation. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing user experiences for actively shipping products and, critically, transforming these designs into a robust design system. This system will include tokens, components, and patterns, enabling engineers to build directly from design artifacts and ensuring a unified visual and interactive language across all Mirai products.

Core Responsibilities

• Design user flows, screens, states, and interactions for Generative AI products across web and mobile platforms, serving both internal and external users.
• Develop comprehensive experiences, including empty states, loading screens, error handling, edge cases, and both first-run and long-term usage scenarios.
• Establish and maintain the visual language for the team's products, covering typography, color, spacing, layout, iconography, and motion.
• Create prototypes to facilitate faster decision-making in the design process.
• Identify recurring design patterns and formalize them into tokens, components, or documented patterns within a design system, distinguishing them from deliberate one-off designs.
• Build and maintain the design system in Figma, utilizing features such as variables, component properties, auto layout, and libraries to ensure reusability and scalability.
• Prepare and hand off the design system to engineering in a directly usable format, including exported design tokens, generated CSS or theme configurations, and written usage rules with examples.
• Ensure the design system remains current with product changes, managing version control, documenting updates, and retiring unused elements.
• Design specific patterns required by AI products that are often not covered by standard design systems, such as chat interfaces, conversational surfaces, streaming output, visible agent steps, tool calls, citations, and human review processes.
• Design for inherent uncertainties in AI products, including latency, partial answers, model errors, and affordances for users to correct or stop agent actions.
• Integrate AI tooling into personal design workflows, leveraging tools like Figma, Claude Design, and handoff layers to accelerate the creation of usable artifacts.
• Package the design system to ensure AI-assisted development adheres to it by default, implementing repository-level rules and skills for coding agents.
• Collaborate with engineers during system adoption, reviewing shipped implementations against design specifications and refining the system as needed.
• Maintain a non-blocking design process, ensuring that product development is not hindered by design dependencies.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Experience: Eight or more years in UI/UX or product design, demonstrating significant ownership of design decisions rather than execution based on external direction.
• Craft and Judgment: Strong visual and interaction design skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions based on user benefit rather than subjective preference.
• Systems Thinking: Proven experience in transforming design work into reusable elements such as tokens, components, patterns, or documented libraries that have been adopted by others.
• Web and Mobile Design: Proficiency in designing for both web and mobile platforms, with a clear understanding of when to apply shared system principles versus platform-specific conventions.
• Figma Proficiency: Advanced Figma skills, including expertise in variables, component properties, auto layout, and library management.
• Design Handoff: Capability to produce artifacts that engineers can build from directly, including familiarity with the token and CSS layers. While not a front-end engineer, willingness to engage with these layers and utilize AI tooling to bridge any gaps is expected.
• Working with AI: Deliberate use of AI tools in personal design workflows, with the ability to articulate their impact and instances where manual override was necessary.
• Portfolio: A portfolio of work that can be presented and discussed, including confidential or unlaunched projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing for AI or agentic products.
• Familiarity with design token pipelines, such as Style Dictionary or the W3C design tokens format.
• Front-end development ability beyond the token layer, such as building components.
• Practical experience with accessibility, including keyboard and focus behavior, and screen reader semantics in component design.
• Experience with right-to-left and bilingual interfaces, particularly Arabic and English.
• Expertise in motion and interaction design, dense or data-heavy interfaces, or data visualization.
• Experience with usability testing or research to validate design decisions.
