About the Role

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Lead Engineering Manager in Control System for IBR based Power Plant Control to join their team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time role requires a specialist in control systems for large utility-scale IBR based power plants, with 5-10 years of experience.

Role Overview

The Lead Engineering Manager will provide technical leadership in control systems for IBR based power plants exceeding 1 GW, including Solar, Wind, BESS, Hybrid Power plants, and large Microgrids connected to EHV Grids or feeding hydrogen process plants. The role also requires expertise in developing control systems for large islanded microgrids. Responsibilities span conceptual engineering, basic engineering, detailed engineering, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and commissioning to ensure seamless plant operation in compliance with grid code requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand IBR plant operations requirements under normal, contingency, and emergency scenarios.
  • Develop control system architecture for IBR based power plants during basic and detailed engineering stages.
  • Ensure control system architecture complies with Grid code, considering functional characteristics of power elements (Inverter, STATCOM, WTG, BESS).
  • Develop detailed functional specifications for various controllers, from simple PV plant controllers to complex hybrid controllers.
  • Manage AGC in controlling power systems and apply it for project-specific control system requirements.
  • Develop and review control architecture to meet plant operations within grid code guidelines.
  • Design, set up, and tune control system parameters (gain, time constant, anti-windup, filters) to meet system operation objectives.
  • Review power system studies (Static/Dynamic and Transient) for Grid compliance and Grid impact.
  • Develop controller models in PSS/e, Dig SILENT, PSCAD, and interpret power system study reports for control system tuning.
  • Set up and test through RTDS system (HIL system) to validate control parameters and overall control system performance.
  • Apply GPS / GNSS based Time synchronization, with familiarity in IEEE 1588 (PTP) and IEEE **** protocols.
  • Interface Advanced Numerical Meters & Measuring Devices, including configuration and handling.
  • Manage Class-A power quality measurements (voltage events, RVC, flicker, harmonics/inter-harmonics) per IEC 61000-4-30 (** 2025).
  • Integrate PMU/synchro phasor measurements per IEEE **** with PDC/SCADA.
  • Interpret Grid code requirements and adapt them for controller specifications.
  • Implement Cyber security according to relevant international standards.
  • Conduct risk assessment and provide mitigation plans based on validation of hybrid controller / PPC logic and power system studies results against Grid code requirements.

Testing, Commissioning, and Troubleshooting

  • Perform cold and hot commissioning of control systems in IBR plants by tuning control parameters in the field.
  • Troubleshoot controller performance and associated system elements.
  • Understand and recreate scenarios through RTDS system for operational issues encountered during commissioning and operation as part of root cause analysis (RCA), and tune control system parameters.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • 5-10 years of experience in control systems for large utility-scale IBR based power plants.
  • In-depth domain expertise in Control System.
  • Thorough understanding of different communication protocols like Modbus TCP/IP / IEC 104 / IEC 61850 Goose.
  • Expertise in power system studies (Static/Dynamic and Transient).
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in relevant international IEC / IEEE standards and usage of CIGRE / other scientific technical journals.
