The Data Department and Role Overview

The Data department at Agoda manages all data-related requirements, aiming to increase data utilization through creative approaches and powerful resources such as operational and analytical databases, queue systems, BI tools, and data science technology. The department supports decision-making for business users, product managers, and engineers, while also improving customer search experiences and protecting against fraudulent activities. As a Senior/Staff Data Engineer (BI) within the Customer Experience Group (CEG) team, you will contribute to designing, building, and maintaining the data and software foundations that support CEG business users in serving customers and agents across various contact channels. This role involves both engineering work, such as pipelines, data models, and internal services, and analytics work, including business questions, dashboards, and deep-dive analysis. At the Staff level, the role also involves shaping CEG’s data and tooling strategy and influencing cross-team architecture.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and serving from CEG systems and third-party tools.
• Develop and optimize data models that support CEG reporting, monitoring, forecasting, QA, and experimentation.
• Ensure data quality, reliability, and observability through validation checks, anomaly detection, and monitoring.
• Improve performance and cost efficiency of data jobs and queries for high-volume CEG data.
• Collaborate with data platform and engineering teams to standardize tooling and best practices.
• Design and build data tools and internal products for CEG, such as self-service analytics and monitoring dashboards.
• Implement APIs, data services, and lightweight UIs using Python, Java, Golang, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Translate operational pain points into concrete data tools, applying solid software engineering practices.
• Partner with CEG product and business teams to translate questions into data problems and design analytic approaches.
• Build and maintain dashboards and reports providing reliable metrics and self-service data access.
• Perform deep-dive analysis to understand trends, identify root causes, and propose data-driven recommendations.
• Define and maintain metrics and KPIs, ensuring consistent definitions across CEG teams.
• Communicate findings in clear, business-friendly language.

Qualifications and Requirements

• 5-10 years of experience in a relevant data engineering or BI role.
• Proficiency in designing, building, and maintaining scalable ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Experience with data modeling for reporting, monitoring, and analytics.
• Demonstrated ability to ensure data quality, reliability, and observability.
• Skills in optimizing data job and query performance and cost efficiency.
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, Java, Golang, or JavaScript/TypeScript for developing APIs and data services.
• Ability to translate business questions into data problems and design analytical approaches.
• Experience in building and maintaining dashboards and reports.
• Strong communication skills to convey technical information to both engineers and business stakeholders.
• At Staff level, ability to define and drive the roadmap for key data tools and platforms, and influence cross-team architecture.

Team Collaboration and Mentorship

The successful candidate will act as a trusted data partner for CEG stakeholders, including operations leaders, product managers, WFM, QA, training, policy, and regional leadership. This role involves collaborating with other data engineers, analysts, and scientists to align on data standards, reusable components, and shared datasets. Mentoring junior and mid-level team members on data engineering, analytics, and software engineering best practices is also a key aspect of this position. Contributions to continuous improvement of team workflows, including code reviews, testing, documentation, and knowledge sharing, are expected.
