About the Role

Air Products is seeking a DCS Operator to join our team in Al Jubail, Eastern region. This full-time position involves the day-to-day operation of a Hydrogen Manufacturing Unit (HYCO facility) from a centralized control room, ensuring production requirements are met safely and efficiently.

Role Overview

The HYCO DCS Operator, reporting to the HYCO Lead/Shift Supervisor, is responsible for the safe, efficient, and stable operation of the entire Hydrogen Manufacturing Unit using the Distributed Control System (DCS). This includes monitoring, controlling, and optimizing processes to meet production targets, quality specifications, and environmental regulations. The role also involves supporting plant performance, process optimization, and production stability, with a strong emphasis on safety and compliance. Daily tasks include preparing and implementing safety work permits, LOTO procedures, completing preventative maintenance activities, and assisting maintenance and engineering teams with corrective maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and stable operating environment, adhering to all company and industry safe work processes.
  • Enforce and adhere to Safe Work Permits, Lock-out Tag-out, and management of change procedures.
  • Act as the first line of response for process emergencies, executing emergency operating procedures and initiating plant trips if necessary.
  • Monitor the status of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Fire & Gas Systems, understanding cause and effect charts for all safety interlocks.
  • Ensure all plant emissions comply with environmental permits and properly manage waste streams.
  • Operate the Steam Methane Reformer based hydrogen plant, including CO2 removal and compression, PSA, Tail Gas compression, and Membrane Unit, as per Work Instruction Procedures.
  • Operate the pipeline network to supply Hydrogen, steam, and CO2 to customers safely and efficiently.
  • Report production progress and plant status, suggesting solutions for shortfalls.
  • Ensure adherence to BHIG standards and global best practices for EH&S, productivity, reliability, quality, and customer service.
  • Meet customer requirements regarding safety, reliability, product quality, and flexibility.
  • Maintain communication with customer counterparts to ensure alignment of expectations and satisfaction of current and future product demand.
  • Constantly monitor all process variables via DCS and manipulate control loops to maintain stable operations.
  • Use historical data and trends to predict equipment performance degradation and identify inefficiencies.
  • Execute detailed start-up sequences for the plant or individual units from various conditions.
  • Maintain constant communication with field operators for equipment adjustments and isolations.
  • Liaise with the maintenance team to coordinate equipment preparation for and return from maintenance.
  • Conduct detailed and accurate shift handovers, highlighting abnormalities and special instructions.
  • Maintain accurate logs of operating parameters, significant events, and production data.
  • Identify root causes of process deviations and equipment malfunctions, working with engineers on solutions.
  • Suggest and participate in operational improvements and de-bottlenecking projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all CM, PM tasks, and Environmental Regulatory requirements.
  • Support and prepare for Shutdown and Turnaround Planning.
  • Provide coaching and motivation to the field operations team.
  • Establish and maintain close working relationships with engineering and maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with process safety, MOCs, and OPHR requirements.
  • Provide operations support and participate in investigations and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Facilitate attainment of operational excellence and customer satisfaction through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate plant activities with other shifts to maintain continuity.
  • Execute other duties as assigned by reporting managers.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Chemical Process Operations is preferred.
  • An Associate Technical Degree (2-year certificate) will be considered based on experience and competence.
  • Required experience: 5-10 years.
  • Minimum of 5 years in Lead DCS Operations.
  • Experience in DCS Operation & Field Operation.
  • Experience as a DCS Operator in an SMR based Hydrogen, Ammonia, Methanol, or Syngas plant.
  • Proficiency with DCS platforms such as Yokogawa Centum VP or Siemens PCS 7.
  • Deep understanding of Chemical Engineering Principles, thermodynamics, and process control.
  • Wide technical knowledge in operations, engineering, and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of awareness and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Strong problem-solving and diagnostic abilities.
  • Clear, concise, and effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to communicate with the customer at the board level daily.
  • Ability to communicate effectively between operations and maintenance teams.
  • A strong commitment to employee involvement, team building, and diversity.
