About the KAUST Global Fellowship Program

KAUST is seeking independently minded scientists and engineers for the KAUST Global Fellowship Program (KGFP) Postdoctoral Fellowship (Call ). This program is designed for individuals in the final year of their PhD or early-career postdoctoral researchers ready to lead their own research initiatives. The fellowship is a three-year contract position based in Thuwal, Makkah, Saudi Arabia, offering an annual stipend of USD 75,000.

Fellowship Objectives and Research Focus

The KGFP provides talented early-career researchers with funding, mentorship, and the independence to pursue original research ideas at KAUST. The program aims to prepare emerging research leaders for independent careers in academia and industry. Research proposals should align with KAUST's strategic priorities, which include Food, Water, Energy, Health, Artificial Intelligence, and Red Sea Exploration. Selection is based on scientific excellence and the innovative nature of the research proposal, encouraging fellows to develop work beyond their PhD research.

Research Environment and Resources

Global Fellows gain access to KAUST's research infrastructure, which includes advanced imaging facilities, a class 100 cleanroom, one of the world's fastest supercomputers, and a fleet of research vessels for Red Sea exploration. KAUST fosters a vibrant international community, with researchers from over 110 nationalities. The campus, located on the shores of the Red Sea, is designed to support balance and wellbeing.

Eligibility and Candidate Profile

Candidates for this fellowship should meet the following criteria:

  • Possess up to two first-author (or joint-first-author) papers published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Provide two reference letters from individuals who can attest to their potential for independent research.
  • Be willing to relocate to KAUST in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. This program is open to applicants of all nationalities.

Application Process

The application process for the KAUST Global Fellowship Program involves multiple stages:

  1. Stage 1 – Concept Note (September 1 – October 1, 2026): Submit a CV (maximum 4 pages), a 3-page concept note, identification of up to three potential KAUST host PIs, and two reference letters.
  2. Stage 2 – Faculty Review (October – November 2026): Eligible applications undergo review by KAUST faculty, who indicate their hosting interest.
  3. Stage 3 – Full Proposal (Invitation Only; Deadline January 15, 2027): Invited candidates submit a full proposal, followed by internal and external review, a final interview, and selection by the Vice President for Research.
