About the Role

The Department of Justice QLD, through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), is seeking expressions of interest for PO3 Legal Officer positions. These are temporary, flexible, full-time roles available in various locations, including the city of Makkah within the Makkah Region. As a Legal Officer with the ODPP, you will play a significant role in preparing cases referred for prosecution, contributing to the administration of justice in Queensland. This is a continuous recruitment pool designed to fill various temporary fixed-term vacancies, with applications remaining current for 12 months.

The ODPP is an integral part of Queensland's justice system, representing the State in prosecuting criminal matters across a range of courts. This role offers a dynamic environment where legal expertise is applied to critical legal processes, addressing complex and sensitive legal matters with professionalism and integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expertly prepare prosecution matters, including appeal submissions, with professionalism and efficiency to ensure the timely delivery of justice.
  • Build connections and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, victims, and witnesses.
  • Represent the ODPP as an advocate in various settings, such as prosecuting or defending appeals in the District Court, and handling sentences, bail applications, mentions, and callovers in the Magistrates and higher courts.
  • Advocate in committal and summary hearings in the Magistrates Court, with opportunities to develop expertise depending on the specific location.
  • Provide liaison with complainants and their families, particularly in sensitive and complex cases involving sexual and violent offences.
  • Mentor, motivate, and guide legal support staff, fostering a supportive and high-performing workplace culture.
  • Actively participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing work practices and contributing to continuous improvement within the organization.
  • Apply legal principles, draft key legal documents, and provide sound legal advice.
  • Act as an effective advocate in the Magistrates and/or higher courts.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal and communication skills to liaise, consult, and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders, ensuring collaborative and strategic outcomes.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor legal and support staff, demonstrating empathy and awareness in addressing the needs of victims of crime.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Admission as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please indicate the date of admission).

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in applying legal principles and drafting legal documents.
  • Strong advocacy skills for court appearances and legal proceedings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated ability in supervision, training, and mentoring of staff.
  • Empathy and awareness in dealing with victims of crime and sensitive cases.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest professional and ethical standards.

Work Context
