About the Role

Air Products is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer - Electrical to provide technical leadership and site electrical engineering consultancy for the NEOM Green Hydrogen Plant (GHE). This full-time position requires over 10 years of experience and will be based in Duba and Neom, Saudi Arabia. The role is critical in ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electrical systems throughout the construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up (CSU), and operational phases of the project.

Role Context and Scope

This position offers electrical engineering leadership and site support across various process units within the Neom Green Hydrogen Plant (GHE), including the Air Separation Unit (ASU), Alkaline Water Electrolysis/Hydrogen Production, Ammonia plant, Hydrogen & Ammonia storage, utilities, Jetty Area, GHE Buildings, and a Centralized Diesel Generation plant. The role operates within a multi-disciplinary, multi-contractor EPC environment, requiring collaboration with Project Management, Construction, Pre-Commissioning, CSU, NGHC Operations teams, vendors, and OEMs. The scope covers comprehensive electrical systems, including MV/LV distribution, substations, SCADA, large rotating equipment, drive systems, rectifiers, protection schemes, earthing, lighting, and hazardous area design. The role also involves technical oversight of power quality and grid integration, addressing complex, cross-functional technical challenges to ensure successful plant energization and transition to operational readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently lead and supervise site electrical engineering activities, ensuring safe, high-quality, and timely execution.
  • Resolve complex and critical issues through structured problem definition, troubleshooting, root cause analysis (RCA), and solution implementation.
  • Drive site electrical engineering execution by responding to TQs/RFIs, closing walkdown punch items, and completing Electrical Operational Readiness Inspections (ORI).
  • Manage Field Change Notices (FCNs) for temporary site modifications and ensure accurate RLM/as-built records.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with mechanical, piping, civil/structural, process control, process systems, process safety, fire protection, HCIS security, and cybersecurity teams for multidisciplinary integration.
  • Manage interfaces with EPC construction contractors, vendors, and OEMs to support troubleshooting from construction through start-up.
  • Demonstrate expertise in large rotating equipment and drive systems, including steam turbine generators, standby generators, induction and synchronous motors, MV/LV VSDs/VFDs, and soft starters.
  • Lead interface coordination and integration of the GHE plant with power generation and grid systems, ensuring Saudi Grid Code compliance.
  • Prepare and review as-built markups for key electrical deliverables, including distribution systems, grounding, lighting, hazardous area classification, SLDs, schematics, and protection schemes.
  • Ensure electrical designs comply with safety principles, Air Products standards, local Saudi Standards, and international codes.
  • Participate in 3D model reviews, design reviews, and constructability assessments.
  • Mentor and develop engineers and designers, promoting technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Safety and Compliance

The role requires strict adherence to Air Products Safety Principles, embedding safe-to-maintain, safe-to-operate, and safe-to-construct philosophies in all designs. Participation in HAZID, HAZOP, electrical safety reviews, and engineering audits is mandatory, along with ensuring compliance with regulatory and environmental requirements.

Work Schedule and Travel

This position operates on a rotational schedule of 8 weeks on-site followed by 2 weeks off, subject to NEOM site assignment policy. During on-site periods, workdays are 6 days per week, 10 hours per day, totaling 60 hours per week. Travel requirements are estimated at 0–10% domestic or international, based on project needs.
