Malayalam Team Lead

About the Role

SME Careers is seeking a Malayalam Quality Assurance Lead (QAL) for a remote, contract position in Saudi Arabia. This role involves overseeing quality, consistency, and trainer performance across Malayalam AI training projects. The QAL will review AI-generated Malayalam content and work from trainers and QAs, ensuring adherence to project guidelines and quality standards. This position is crucial for improving AI models by ensuring Malayalam training data is accurate, culturally appropriate, and aligned with client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct spot-checks of Malayalam items, identify quality issues, provide ongoing feedback, and escalate critical concerns.
• Communicate updates to trainers and QAs regarding new item guidelines, project changes, workflow updates, and quality expectations.
• Respond promptly and clearly to trainer/QA questions, particularly concerning Malayalam wording, register, translation fidelity, cultural context, and regional usage.
• Manage trainer/QA activation by contacting inactive contributors, encouraging participation, tracking follow-ups, and flagging availability issues.
• Create and maintain Malayalam project documentation, including style guides, trackers, FAQs, quality notes, and onboarding materials.
• Schedule and conduct onboarding/training calls for trainers and QAs to explain project expectations, workflows, rubrics, and Malayalam-specific style requirements.
• Ensure consistent application of Malayalam language guidelines by all trainers and QAs, and communicate project updates effectively.
• Identify recurring quality gaps, propose workflow improvements, and contribute to building scalable QA processes for Malayalam-language projects.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Malayalam, Linguistics, Translation, Communications, Journalism, English, Education, Quality Assurance, or a related field.
• Native or near-native Malayalam proficiency with strong reading and writing skills.
• Strong grasp of the English language for following guidelines, team communication, and providing feedback.
• 3+ years of professional experience in Malayalam writing, editing, translation, localization, content QA, AI training, education, annotation, or similar language review workflows.
• Strong understanding of Malayalam grammar, spelling conventions, punctuation, tone, register, regional variation, and cultural context.
• Ability to evaluate Malayalam content against detailed rubrics and identify issues such as mistranslation, literal phrasing, unnatural tone, or inconsistent terminology.
• Experience leading or supporting remote teams of trainers, annotators, reviewers, editors, or QAs is preferred.
• Experience with AI training, data annotation, large language models, prompt/response evaluation, or rubric-based LLM QA is a strong advantage.

• Proficiency in managing quality workflows across remote teams.
• Comfortable working in fast-moving remote environments using tools such as Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, and project management systems.
• Highly organized, with the ability to maintain style guides, FAQs, trackers, and other quality documentation.

Work Environment

This is an hourly, remote contractor role with SME Careers, a subsidiary of SuperAnnotate. The position involves working with remote teams to deliver training data for AI companies and foundation-model labs.
