About the Role

Farabi Petrochemicals is seeking a dedicated Instrument Engineer to join our team in Yanbu. This full-time position is crucial for providing expert guidance and support for maintenance activities related to control systems and instrumentation within the plant. The role involves a comprehensive range of responsibilities, from troubleshooting and vendor liaison to ensuring instrument reliability, suggesting improvements, developing procedures, and conducting training for maintenance personnel. Candidates should possess 5-10 years of relevant experience in a similar industrial environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Implement approved section policies, processes, and procedures, monitoring adherence for controlled work execution.
  • Analyze instrumentation system performance and provide recommendations for enhancement.
  • Assist in vendor contract management and the preparation of technical reports.
  • Support maintenance activities for control systems and instruments throughout the plant.
  • Establish procedures and instructions for instrument calibration and maintenance, ensuring adherence to engineering principles and safety regulations.
  • Witness and test newly installed control systems and instruments to confirm compliance with vendor specifications.
  • Review required spares and services with vendors to prevent delays in instrument and system maintenance.
  • Participate in decisions regarding instrument replacement by providing thorough technical evaluations.
  • Record and analyze causes of instrument failures, recommending long-term remedy solutions.
  • Perform engineering analysis and develop recommendations for complex problems in process control units, including Yokogawa and Emerson systems.
  • Review and participate in SCADA and ESD designs, Cause & Effects reviews, and lead pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Conduct reviews of Control Narratives and Cause & Effects, delivering associated reports.
  • Witness field-testing of installed instrumentation, confirming readings and test values.
  • Collaborate with Operations teams to investigate and troubleshoot all types of control systems and instrumentation.
  • Lead investigation teams and conduct root cause analysis for ESD, DCS, compressor control, condition monitoring, field instrumentation, and devices.
  • Develop technical studies, reports, and reviews for various control systems and instrumentation.
  • Provide engineering technical support for maintaining DCS systems, PLCs, and ESD Triconex systems.
  • Assess plant facilities and process arrangements, recommending new installations or modifications to improve control performance or replace defective/obsolete equipment.
  • Assess plant safety integrity levels and recommend improvements.
  • Develop KPIs for DCS and auxiliary control systems regarding reliability and efficiency.
  • Communicate with vendors and technical consultants to resolve technical issues related to upgrades, system performance, reliability, and new installations.
  • Mentor and transfer technical knowledge and skills to entry-level engineers.
  • Evaluate and analyze critical equipment and spares Mean Time Between Failures (MTBE).
  • Ensure consistency in general provisions, vendor evaluation, and recommendations.
  • Maintain records of repairs, calibrations, and tests.
  • Ensure compliance with work instructions and plans, maintaining equipment downtime within specified standards.
  • Contribute to updates of procedures and maintenance instructions.
  • Prepare accurate technical evaluation reports for the Department, meeting requirements, policies, and standards.

Operational Guidelines and Decision-Making

The Instrument Engineer operates within detailed standard practices and instructions. All work is subject to technical evaluations, ensuring adherence to established guidelines and procedures.

Key Relationships

This role requires extensive collaboration both internally and externally:

  • Internal: Operations, Maintenance, Project & Engineering, Warehouse, ISD, Procurement, HR & GS.
  • External: Existing and potential suppliers, vendors, and contractors as required.

Experience and Qualifications

Candidates for this position must possess 5-10 years of experience in instrument engineering, preferably within the petrochemical industry or a similar heavy industrial setting. This includes a strong background in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and analysis of control systems and instrumentation.

A strong commitment to safety and operational integrity is paramount. The Instrument Engineer is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the reliability of instruments and systems.
  • Ensuring equipment availability and the achievement of production targets and plant safety/integrity.
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant health, safety, security, and environmental procedures.
  • Actively participating in promoting risk assessments, safety, health, and environmental programs.
  • Participating in incident investigations, providing technical expertise to understand causes and develop recurrence prevention recommendations.
