Lead Nuclear Safety & Environmental Engineer

About the Role

Worley, a global company specializing in energy, chemicals, and resources, is seeking a Lead Nuclear Safety & Environmental Engineer. This full-time position is based in Al Khobar, Eastern Province, and requires over 10 years of experience. The role involves providing independent technical leadership and assurance for nuclear safety, radiation protection, environmental compliance, and emergency preparedness throughout the project lifecycle.

Position Purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with Saudi Arabian regulatory requirements, IAEA Safety Standards, international best practices, and the Owner's Nuclear Safety Policy. This includes independently reviewing and challenging EPC Contractor deliverables from site selection and licensing through design, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead independent nuclear safety reviews and technical assurance activities.
• Review safety case documentation, including PSAR, FSAR, and supporting analyses.
• Ensure the implementation of defence-in-depth and ALARA principles.
• Support the Owner's Nuclear Safety Management System and promote a strong nuclear safety culture.
• Review Environmental Impact Assessments and environmental compliance programmes.
• Oversee radiation protection strategies, environmental monitoring, radioactive waste management, and occupational dose optimisation.
• Lead the development and review of emergency preparedness and response programmes.
• Review emergency procedures, severe accident management guidance, and emergency exercises.
• Support nuclear licensing and regulatory submissions, interfacing with the nuclear regulator and international organisations like the IAEA.
• Independently review EPC Contractor deliverables, identify technical risks, and provide recommendations to the Owner.
• Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, Probabilistic Safety Assessments (PSA), commissioning reviews, and operational readiness assessments.
• Provide nuclear safety and environmental oversight during construction and commissioning, including reviewing commissioning procedures and witnessing safety-critical testing.
