About the Role

International Maritime Industries is seeking a Safety Officer to implement and monitor HSE requirements across assigned shipyard zones and projects. This full-time role involves maintaining a strong field presence, conducting inspections, and supporting supervisors and contractors to prevent incidents and ensure compliance. The position requires 2-5 years of relevant experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous field presence and conduct planned and ad-hoc inspections in assigned areas (yard, quayside, workshops, vessel/structure work fronts) to identify hazards, verify controls, and stop unsafe work.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when an imminent risk or serious breach is observed, ensuring the area is made safe and promptly notifying responsible personnel.
  • Verify the effective application of the Permit to Work (PTW) system and critical work controls (*, Hot Work, Confined Space Entry, LOTO, Working at Height, Lifting/Rigging).
  • Confirm that risk assessments (JSA/TRA) are suitable and sufficient for the task and match site conditions, escalating where controls are missing or ineffective.
  • Monitor contractors and subcontractors for compliance with IMI HSE requirements and contractual obligations, issuing observations/violations and tracking close-out.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly, participating in investigations and root cause analysis to define and follow corrective actions.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and on-the-job coaching to improve hazard awareness and strengthen safe behaviours, intervening to correct at-risk behaviours.
  • Support emergency preparedness by checking the availability and condition of relevant emergency equipment and participating in drills and site emergency response activities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely inspection records, observations, corrective action follow-up, and reports in accordance with IMI document control requirements.
  • Work shifts/rosters as assigned and perform other HSE-related duties as directed by the Operational Safety Supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High School Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in a relevant safety role.

Certifications and Accreditations

  • NEBOSH IGC (Preferred)
  • NEBOSH Process Safety Management (Preferred)
  • OSHA 30 Hrs.
  • IOSH
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Working at Height / Scaffolding Inspector
  • Basic Lifting Equipment Inspection
