Consultant ICU

Intensive Care Unit Specific Duties

• Provide emergency consultation in the subspecialty as per the duty rota.
• Actively participate in daily unit management activities, including triage, bed allocation, discharge planning, and supervision of unit policies.
• Conduct regular ICU rounds with the team, seeing patients at least twice daily or as acuity requires.
• Investigate and manage patients with medical problems related to the subspecialty, performing invasive and non-invasive procedures as indicated by competence.
• Perform critical care procedures such as endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, placement of intravascular catheters (arterial, central venous, pulmonary artery), cardiopulmonary resuscitation, placement of transvenous temporary pacing leads, and tube thoracostomy.
• Serve as a team leader within the ICU, integrating and facilitating care for patients with complex illnesses or injuries, including multi-system failure.
• Participate in ongoing Quality Improvement and Infection Control activities, including data collection and committee memberships.

Qualifications and Experience

• A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in a relevant medical field.
• Demonstrated professional competence and adherence to medical ethics and hospital by-laws.
• Ability to provide effective leadership within the department and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with medical literature.

Reporting and Collaboration

The Consultant ICU reports directly to the Head of Department. This role involves liaising with consultants within the same specialty and other departments, nursing staff, respiratory therapy, and other healthcare professionals, as well as patients and their families. The Consultant will supervise Senior Registrars, Registrars, Residents, Respiratory Therapy, Nurses, and other assigned paramedical staff.
