Drainage Engineer Opportunity at WSP Middle East

WSP Middle East is seeking an experienced Drainage Engineer to join its Construction Supervision team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position is crucial for the successful delivery of a major roads and highways infrastructure project.

Role Purpose and Project Context

The primary purpose of this role is to oversee the construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of drainage infrastructure works. The Drainage Engineer will ensure all activities comply with approved designs, technical specifications, applicable standards, and project quality requirements within a large-scale transportation and infrastructure environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise all drainage-related construction activities, ensuring execution aligns with approved drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure adherence to project quality, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Review and verify construction methodologies, work procedures, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and method statements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits of drainage works, including stormwater networks, reinforced concrete structures, box and pipe culverts, open channels, catch pits, manholes, headwalls, outfalls, and retention/detention facilities.
  • Ensure proper installation, alignment, levels, and workmanship of drainage infrastructure.
  • Review drainage shop drawings and contractor submissions, verifying compliance with approved designs, local authority requirements, and international engineering standards.
  • Address Requests for Information (RFIs), technical queries, material approvals, and engineering proposals submitted by contractors.
  • Identify construction issues and provide practical engineering solutions to maintain project progress.
  • Coordinate with design teams for necessary design clarifications or modifications.
  • Implement quality assurance and quality control procedures, witnessing inspections, testing, and commissioning activities associated with drainage systems.
  • Review material testing reports and verify compliance with specifications.
  • Ensure all drainage works meet required quality standards prior to acceptance and review as-built records and project documentation.

Required Experience and Technical Expertise

Candidates must possess over 10 years of experience in highway drainage systems, stormwater management infrastructure, culverts, channels, detention systems, utility interfaces, and associated civil works. Extensive experience within large-scale transportation and infrastructure projects is essential for this role.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

The role requires close coordination with Resident Engineers, Civil Engineers, Highway Engineers, Utility Engineers, Surveyors, and HSE teams. The Drainage Engineer will also interface with contractors, subcontractors, local authorities, utility providers, and client representatives, participating in technical meetings, progress meetings, and site coordination workshops to support the resolution of construction and interface issues affecting project delivery.

Progress Monitoring and Reporting

Responsibilities include monitoring the progress of drainage construction activities against project schedules, identifying risks, delays, and potential claims related to drainage works. The engineer will prepare technical reports, inspection reports, Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), snagging lists, and progress updates, assisting senior project leadership in tracking construction performance and project milestones.
