About Saudi Gold Refinery and the Role

Saudi Gold Refinery Co. (SGR) is a leading Saudi mining and precious-metals company specializing in the refining of gold and other precious metals, bullion production, and value-added services. Operating within the Kingdom’s mining value chain, SGR is committed to Vision 2030 and adheres to stringent regulatory frameworks and international standards, including LBMA Good Delivery and ISO-aligned quality. We are seeking a Processing Engineer to join our team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time role requires 5-10 years of experience and is crucial for optimizing our refining operations.

Role Overview and Objectives

The Processing Engineer will be responsible for optimizing hydrometallurgical refining circuits to ensure maximum precious metal recovery. This position involves managing process parameters for the Miller and Wohlwill processes to produce LBMA-grade bullion, while strictly adhering to safety and environmental standards. Reporting directly to the Refinery Manager, the engineer will play a key role in maintaining yield efficiency and operational stability, ensuring all refining activities comply with SASO standards and internal quality requirements. The role also includes leading technical troubleshooting and implementing Management of Change protocols for process modifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitors real-time process data to adjust temperature, pressure, and chemical concentrations for optimal recovery rates.
  • Calculates and tracks metal mass balances to ensure reconciliation accuracy within acceptable audit tolerances.
  • Ensures all process operations comply with ISO 14001 environmental standards and local effluent discharge limits.
  • Leads root cause analysis investigations for process upsets, equipment failures, or quality non-conformances.
  • Manages the Management of Change (MOC) process for any modification to process parameters, chemicals, or equipment.
  • Delivers technical training to operators on chemical hazards, process controls, and emergency response procedures.
  • Develops and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all refining stages to ensure consistent operational execution.
  • Provides technical data and process documentation to support internal and external quality audits.
  • Analyzes reagent consumption trends and implements measures to reduce costs per kilogram of refined metal.
  • Collaborates with Maintenance to define technical specifications for spare parts and repair scopes for refining equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in hydrometallurgy or precious metals refining.
  • Proven expertise in gold and silver refining processes, including Miller chlorination and Wohlwill electrolysis.
  • Strong understanding of mass balance calculations and metallurgical accounting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HSE regulations and chemical safety management.
  • Experience with root cause analysis methodologies such as Fishbone or FMEA.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and process flow diagrams.
  • Proficiency in English for technical reporting and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Extractive Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience with LBMA Good Delivery List requirements.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems.
  • Previous work experience in a Saudi industrial facility.

Performance Indicators

  • Maintain gold recovery rates above ** for all refining batches.
  • Achieve a 5% decrease in chemical consumption per kilogram of refined gold.
  • Ensure all process upsets have completed root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Successfully provide technical response for at least one internal or external quality audit.
  • Ensure all refining SOPs are updated and validated to reflect current practices.
  • Achieve 100% training and certification of shift operators on updated procedures.
  • Maintain zero environmental non-compliances or safety incidents related to process operations.
