Junior Database Engineer

About the Role

Pure-IN (وقود العربية) is seeking a Junior Database Engineer to join its team in Jeddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. This is a full-time position requiring 0-1 years of experience. The role involves managing and maintaining the company's PostgreSQL database, ensuring data accuracy and integrity for critical operations, finance, and regulatory reporting.

Role Context

Pure-IN operates fuel stations across four regions around Jeddah and is in the process of bringing its fuel management system in-house. This role is central to ensuring the reliability of data from station controllers, including sales and tank readings, which are critical for internal operations and compliance with Ministry of Energy records. The successful candidate will work within a small team, contributing directly to the live system.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement database schema changes using versioned migration scripts.
• Manage the data migration process from the existing MySQL system to PostgreSQL, including rehearsal, execution, and verification of data totals.
• Ensure the unique storage of data from station controllers, preventing duplicate entries.
• Develop automated checks for data integrity, covering sales totals, tank readings, and time zones, to run on every data change.
• Administer database users and permissions to enforce data access controls.
• Oversee database backups, restore procedures, and query performance optimization as data volume increases.

Qualifications and Requirements

• A degree in computer science, IT, or software engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Demonstrated experience with at least one project involving database table design in PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• An active GitHub or GitLab profile showcasing personal code contributions.
• Regular use of an AI coding agent (*, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) and a project built with such a tool.
• Residency in Jeddah or a confirmed plan to relocate.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Specific experience with PostgreSQL features such as roles, permissions, migrations, and query plan analysis (EXPLAIN).
• Scripting proficiency in Python, PHP, or Node.
• Familiarity with Linux and SSH, including experience deploying to a server.
• Prior experience in migrating data between different database systems.
• Experience with hardware interaction, including IoT, sensors, Arduino, or serial devices.

Work Environment

The role involves working with a small team, including one other developer and the IT & Software Manager. While most work can be performed remotely, some on-site days in Jeddah are required. The environment involves working with inherited code that requires careful untangling, particularly as it handles financial and regulatory data, necessitating thorough review and testing for every change.
