About the Role

Bupa Arabia is seeking a Registrar Gastroenterology to join their team in Makkah, with opportunities in Jeddah and Makkah. This full-time position involves providing specialized care for patients with gastrointestinal and hepatology disorders through virtual platforms, operating under consultant supervision.

Role Purpose and Context

The Telemedicine Gastroenterology Registrar integrates clinical expertise with digital health technologies to deliver accessible, efficient, safe, and patient-centered care. The role ensures compliance with SCFHS, telemedicine regulations, and clinical governance standards, focusing on virtual patient consultations and clinical management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage gastrointestinal and hepatology conditions using telehealth tools (video, phone, secure messaging) for assessment, diagnosis, and management.
  • Address common GI conditions including GERD, dyspepsia, IBS, constipation, diarrhoea, stable inflammatory bowel disease, fatty liver disease, hepatitis follow-up, GI-related anaemia, and functional GI disorders.
  • Review laboratory results and imaging remotely, adjusting management plans as necessary.
  • Identify red flags requiring urgent in-person assessment or hospital referral.
  • Develop individualized treatment and monitoring plans in collaboration with consultants.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Participate in telemedicine-driven GI care pathways, such as GERD clinics, IBS pathways, and liver disease follow-up.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in gastroenterology, hepatology, and digital health through CME, workshops, and conferences.
  • Participate in case discussions and academic activities, and support teaching and supervision of junior doctors when required.
  • Adhere to internal medicine/gastroenterology clinical guidelines, telemedicine regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Ensure safe prescribing practices, including dose adjustments for liver impairment, and monitor patients for medication side effects.
  • Report patient safety concerns and adverse events to the Quality Department.
  • Participate in virtual audits, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical reviews.
  • Utilize telemedicine platforms for video consultations, secure messaging, and lab result reviews, maintaining confidential digital patient records.
  • Communicate diagnoses and management plans clearly and empathetically, providing education on disease progression, treatment options, and red-flag symptoms.
  • Address patient concerns and follow-up questions promptly via telehealth channels, encouraging adherence to treatment plans.

Professional Development

The role requires continuous professional development, including maintaining current knowledge in gastroenterology, hepatology, and digital health. Participation in continuing medical education (CME), workshops, conferences, and academic activities is expected. The Registrar will also support the teaching and supervision of junior doctors as needed.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

Adherence to clinical guidelines, telemedicine regulations, and ethical standards is paramount. This includes safe prescribing practices, monitoring medication side effects, and reporting patient safety concerns. The Registrar will also participate in virtual audits and quality improvement initiatives.

Patient Experience and Collaboration

A focus on patient experience involves clear and empathetic communication of diagnoses and treatment plans, patient education, and prompt responses to inquiries via telehealth. The role also emphasizes multidisciplinary and consultant collaboration to ensure comprehensive patient care.
