About the HPC Computational Scientist Role

KAUST is seeking a highly motivated and skilled HPC Computational Scientist to join its team in Thuwal, Makkah. This full-time position requires 5-10 years of experience in supporting large-scale computing platforms and related subsystems. The successful candidate will provide expert support for internally developed codes on high-performance computing (HPC) systems, including Shaheen III CPUs and GPU partitions.

Core Responsibilities

The primary focus of this role is to support research and enablement activities within computational science and engineering, big data analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning on KAUST's HPC systems. This includes providing expertise in the installation, porting, and performance tuning of HPC applications and libraries for efficient execution on both CPU and GPU architectures. The role also involves developing and delivering training materials, user documentation, and internal documentation.

Key Duties and Support Functions

  • Directly support research and enablement activities on KSL HPC systems.
  • Provide expertise in HPC applications and libraries installation, porting, and performance tuning.
  • Develop, deliver, update, and support training and user documentation.
  • Develop HPC applications and software tools as needed to support user research.
  • Collaborate closely with end-users, including faculty, researchers, and industrial partners, to meet research objectives.
  • Provide timely user support via telephone, email, and ticketing systems, maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Maintain scientific, technical, and professional currency through collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Stay informed about state-of-the-art computer technology and support benchmarking activities.
  • Review and prepare documentation for systems, tests, and software installations.
  • Provide individual and group instruction and training to the user community.
  • Develop software tools and parallel application libraries to support research projects.
  • Develop software application benchmarks for system upgrades.
  • Engage in scientific communication and outreach, pursuing co-authorship of papers and presentations.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must possess a ** in computer science, computational science and engineering, or a closely related discipline. A minimum of five years of experience using and supporting large-scale computing platforms and related subsystems is required. Relevant experience in computational science and engineering, parallel computing, and storage systems is also necessary. Previous research experience in areas such as performance modeling, I/O and data management, emerging architectures, node-level programming (CUDA, OpenCL, OpenACC/OpenMP), or distributed system programming models (MPI) is required. Experience with computing at scale, such as on a Top500 list system, is desired.

Essential Skills and Competencies

  • Expertise in using or supporting computational science, data analysis, and AI/ML applications and libraries in HPC environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to support research activities in an HPC setting.
  • Proficiency in programming HPC applications and tools (*, Fortran, C/C++, Python, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenACC).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to prepare written and oral reports.
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-cultural and highly collaborative research environments.
  • Organizational understanding, global thinking, and planning skills.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and deliver high-quality results within deadlines.
