About the Student Mentor Role at OffSec

OffSec, founded in 2006 by the creators of Kali Linux, is a leading provider of continuous professional development and training for cybersecurity practitioners. The company's practical, hands-on learning approach aims to address the infosec talent gap. OffSec operates with a global presence, with team members in over 40 countries, fostering an environment that inspires individuals from diverse backgrounds. This full-time position offers the opportunity to work remotely.

Role Overview and Responsibilities

The Student Mentor at OffSec is responsible for providing support and guidance to students through live chat, email, and exam grading. Exam grading will be based on the mentor's achieved certifications. Depending on the candidate's strengths, duties may extend to supporting various project assignments, including onsite, online, or remote course training, vulnerable machine testing, wiki creation, network connectivity troubleshooting, and software development. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed. This role requires shift work, including evenings and weekends, to support a 24/7 coverage model.

  • Engage with and assist students via the OffSec Community Platform, live chat, and support email.
  • Present live streams or webinars for concept demonstrations, machine walkthroughs, or cybersecurity-related topics.
  • Participate in projects such as curriculum and learning path design, new course reviews, test lab machine development, and the implementation of new tools and systems.
  • Grade student exams.
  • Test, configure, deploy, and troubleshoot OffSec lab systems and machines.
  • Create and maintain department documentation, guidelines, procedures, and processes.
  • Ensure timely and satisfactory completion of daily tasks and ongoing student support.
  • Review and approve accommodation requests and supporting documentation, maintaining records of decisions.
  • Assist cross-functional teams as required.
  • Work a shift schedule, with flexibility to adjust to different time zones.
  • Undertake international travel to customer locations or training conferences as needed, without travel restrictions.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should possess an OSCP certification and a cybersecurity mindset for creative problem-solving. Fluency in reading, writing, and comprehending English is essential. The role requires a minimum of 3 years of well-rounded IT experience, including at least 2 years in server-side technologies and management, with experience operating and troubleshooting both Linux and Windows environments. Familiarity with enterprise-level networking configuration is necessary. Experience with defense cybersecurity concepts such as SOC, IR, TH, MITRE D3FEND, and the NICE framework is considered a plus. A strong drive to improve customer experience, success, and engagement, utilizing data and metrics, is important. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, strong attention to detail, and excellent analytical and investigation skills are required. The ability to work unsupervised in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines is also necessary, alongside a strong understanding of being a team player in a remote working setting.

Work Environment and Schedule

This is a full-time position to be performed from a home office. The role requires availability for shift work, including evenings and weekends, to cover a 24/7 operational model. Specifically, candidates must be able to work Shift 1 (05:00–13:00 GMT).
