Safety Officer

About the Role

International Maritime Industries is seeking a Safety Officer to implement and monitor HSE requirements across assigned shipyard zones and projects. This full-time role involves maintaining a strong field presence, conducting inspections, and verifying critical controls to prevent incidents and ensure compliance with legal and company standards. The position requires 2-5 years of relevant experience.

Role Purpose

The primary objective of the Safety Officer is to ensure the effective application of International Maritime Industries' HSE requirements within operational and support areas. This involves active field engagement, identifying and addressing unsafe conditions, and providing support to supervisors and contractors to maintain a safe working environment and uphold compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous field presence and conduct planned and ad-hoc inspections in assigned areas (yard, quayside, workshops, vessel/structure work fronts) to identify hazards, verify controls, and stop unsafe work.
• Exercise stop-work authority when imminent risk or serious breaches are observed, ensuring the area is made safe, notifying relevant personnel, and supporting controlled restarts after corrective actions.
• Verify the effective application of the Permit to Work (PTW) system and critical work controls (*, Hot Work, Confined Space Entry, LOTO, Working at Height, Lifting/Rigging), including permit accuracy, isolations, and worksite conditions.
• Confirm that risk assessments (JSA/TRA) are suitable and sufficient for tasks and match site conditions, escalating issues where controls are missing or ineffective.
• Monitor contractors and subcontractors for compliance with IMI HSE requirements and contractual obligations, issuing observations/violations and tracking close-out.
• Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly, participating in investigations and root cause analysis, and ensuring corrective actions are defined and followed.
• Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and on-the-job coaching to improve hazard awareness and strengthen safe behaviors, intervening to correct at-risk behaviors.
• Support emergency preparedness by checking emergency equipment and participating in drills and site emergency response activities.
• Maintain accurate and timely inspection records, observations, corrective action follow-up, and reports in accordance with document control requirements.
• Work assigned shifts/rosters and perform other HSE-related duties as directed by the Operational Safety Supervisor.

Experience and Qualifications

• 2-5 years of experience in a safety-related role.
• Demonstrated ability to implement and monitor HSE requirements in an industrial or shipyard environment.
• Proficiency in conducting inspections and verifying critical controls such as Permit to Work (PTW), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Task Risk Assessment (TRA).
• Experience in incident reporting, investigation, and root cause analysis.
• Ability to deliver safety briefings and provide on-the-job coaching.

Work Environment

This role operates within the shipyard environment, covering various operational and support areas including the yard, quayside, workshops, and vessel/structure work fronts. The position requires a continuous field presence and may involve working shifts/rosters as assigned.
