The Role of Site Archaeologist
Bin Omairah Company is seeking a Site Archaeologist to join its team in Riyadh. This full-time role is responsible for providing essential archaeological support, monitoring, documentation, and field supervision throughout construction and development activities where archaeological or cultural heritage resources may be present. The Site Archaeologist ensures that all findings are identified, documented, protected, and managed in compliance with project requirements, Saudi regulations, heritage authority guidelines, and recognized archaeological standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeological monitoring and field inspections during excavation, earthworks, and other construction activities.
- Identify, assess, and document archaeological remains, artefacts, structures, features, and cultural heritage resources encountered on site.
- Undertake archaeological survey, excavation, test trenching, and recording as required by project scope and approved methodology.
- Maintain accurate archaeological records, including context sheets, field notes, photographs, plans, sections, registers, and site documentation.
- Record and maintain archaeological stratigraphy, applying appropriate stratigraphic recording and Harris Matrix principles.
- Supervise archaeological field activities and coordinate archaeological teams, subcontractors, and specialist personnel.
- Monitor construction activities and provide timely advice regarding potential impacts on archaeological resources.
- Coordinate with Construction, Engineering, Environmental, HSE, and Survey teams to integrate archaeological requirements into site activities.
- Support archaeological surveys and site mapping using GPS, total station, GIS, and other field technologies.
- Process, label, catalogue, and maintain records of recovered archaeological finds according to approved procedures.
- Support the preparation of archaeological assessment reports, monitoring reports, excavation reports, and heritage documentation.
- Ensure archaeological records and databases are accurately maintained in both digital and physical formats.
- Support the implementation of Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs), Archaeological Management Plans, and Chance Find Procedures.
- Immediately report significant archaeological discoveries or potential heritage risks to the Project Manager and relevant specialists.
- Ensure archaeological activities comply with applicable Saudi heritage requirements, project specifications, approved methodologies, and professional standards.
- Participate in site meetings, inspections, toolbox talks, and project coordination meetings relevant to archaeological matters.
- Provide archaeological awareness and guidance to construction personnel to prevent accidental damage to heritage resources.
- Maintain professional, accurate, and confidential records of archaeological discoveries and sensitive heritage information.
- Support other archaeological, heritage, research, and site documentation activities as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in archaeological field supervision, monitoring, and documentation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of archaeological standards, methodologies, and cultural heritage management principles.
- Familiarity with applicable Saudi regulations and heritage authority requirements.
- Proficiency in archaeological recording techniques, including stratigraphic recording and Harris Matrix principles.
- Experience with field technologies such as GPS, total station, and GIS for archaeological surveys and site mapping.
- Strong communication and coordination skills for effective collaboration with diverse project teams.
Work Environment
The Site Archaeologist will work closely with construction, engineering, environmental, HSE, and project teams to ensure responsible execution of activities while safeguarding archaeological and cultural heritage assets. The role requires working effectively in remote, desert, coastal, and physically demanding site environments, often under varying weather conditions.
