About the Role

WSP in the Middle East is seeking a Principal Engineer – Bridges & Tunnels to join its Transport & Infrastructure team. This full-time position is based in either Jeddah or Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The role involves providing technical leadership for significant structural design projects, supporting major infrastructure programs across the Kingdom.

Role Context and Objectives

The Principal Engineer will be responsible for the technical direction and successful delivery of complex bridge and tunnel design packages. This role requires deep technical expertise in structural design, proven leadership in delivering large-scale bridge projects, and a comprehensive understanding of regional (preferably KSA) authority processes, standards, and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and oversight for bridge and tunnel design projects within Saudi Arabia.
• Lead the development of concept, preliminary, and detailed designs, ensuring adherence to KSA standards.
• Serve as Engineer of Record or Design Lead on designated projects, ensuring technical quality and integrity.
• Review and approve design calculations, drawings, reports, and specifications.
• Engage directly with KSA authorities and key clients, representing WSP in senior technical and commercial discussions.
• Manage authority submissions, technical negotiations, and responses to review comments.
• Promote innovation, value engineering, and design optimization while prioritizing safety and constructability.
• Mentor and develop engineers at senior, intermediate, and junior levels within the bridges and structures team.
• Support project managers with technical resourcing, program planning, risk management, and delivery strategies.
• Contribute to business development efforts, including bids, proposals, and client engagement.
• Support the growth of WSP’s bridges and tunnels capability and reputation in Saudi Arabia.
• Ensure all work complies with WSP’s quality management systems, health and safety standards, and sustainability objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; a Master’s degree is preferred.
• A minimum of 13 years of relevant experience in bridges and tunnels design, preferably within a leading consultancy.
• Strong regional experience is essential, with KSA project experience being highly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams on large and complex projects.
• Experience in roles such as Design Manager, Design Lead, or Engineer of Record.
• Extensive experience working with international engineering consultancies on large transport infrastructure projects.
• Proficiency with industry-standard bridge analysis and design software (*, MIDAS, LUSAS, RM Bridge, CSI Bridge, or equivalent).
• Chartered Engineer status (ICE, IStructE, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
