About the Role

KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sr Lab Equipment Maintenance Engineer (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry). This full-time position is based in Thuwal, Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and focuses on providing expert service and support for high-tech laboratory research equipment.

Role Purpose and Scope

The Senior Lab Equipment Maintenance Engineer is responsible for performing field service repairs, maintenance, calibrations, and alignments on advanced laboratory instruments. A key objective is to maximize equipment uptime while minimizing maintenance costs. This role also involves mentoring junior maintenance personnel and conducting user maintenance and equipment operation training sessions, adhering to established standard operating procedures and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond promptly to maintenance and troubleshooting requests.
• Complete assigned work with high quality and in a timely manner.
• Coordinate with end-users to schedule equipment maintenance and other services.
• Build and maintain strategic relationships with research equipment manufacturers and vendors to facilitate support and training.
• Confer with lab equipment operators, manufacturers, and agents to diagnose problems and implement solutions.
• Identify required spare parts, optimize stock levels, and assist with the ordering process.
• Provide clear, grammatically correct, and regular communications to end-users.
• Maximize insourcing of maintenance activities and coordinate vendor visits when necessary, minimizing equipment downtime.
• Participate in professional development to maintain expertise on assigned equipment.
• Collaborate with the team through workload sharing, cross-training, and mentorship to sustain high service levels.
• Instruct end-users on preventative equipment maintenance strategies and proper instrument use.
• Provide occasional value-added user training sessions on assigned equipment within expertise.
• Comply with all HSE and KAUST safety policies, practices, and procedures.
• Identify process improvement areas to enhance efficiency and increase automation.
• Work closely with Lab Equipment Maintenance Leads to define and complete additional objectives.
• Ability to work extended hours as needed and travel 10% of the time for training and external services.

Qualifications

• Essential: Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
• Essential: Factory service training in the class of equipment covered by the unit.
• Essential: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Preferable: Proficiency with using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) such as SAP.
• Preferable: Training in quality systems such as ISO 9001:2015, Six Sigma, and Lean principles.

Required Experience

• Minimum 7 years’ experience as a field service engineer or in-house maintenance engineer performing service-level maintenance and repairs on Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC–MS) from Bruker. This includes experience with Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR), Trapped Ion Mobility Spectrometry combined with Time-of-Flight (TIMS-TOF), Quadrupole Time-of-Flight (Q-TOF), and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization - Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF) models.
• Experience with other major manufacturers is considered a plus.
• Experience providing service to academic organizations is considered a plus.
