About the Senior Data Scientist Role

Salla is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead the Platforms Metrics & Analytics function. Based in Medina, Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia, this full-time position is central to how merchants on the Salla platform understand and grow their businesses through data. The role involves owning the metrics and analytics layer, ensuring that all reports, metrics, and models delivered are accurate, unified, and scalable.

Key Objectives and Impact

The Senior Data Scientist will be a driving force in establishing a single, coherent analytical foundation across the platform. This involves close collaboration with the Platform Reports Product Manager and Platform Data Quality Engineers, as well as partnering with Product Managers across various product areas. The primary objective is to ensure the success of merchant reports and analytics, providing every merchant with a reliable and well-documented view of their growth.

Core Responsibilities

• Define the vision, standards, and roadmap for metrics, models, and reporting delivered through the Data Platform layer.
• Consolidate fragmented metric definitions into a single, governed semantic layer by unifying data models across product areas.
• Design, validate, and continuously improve merchant-facing reports and analytics essential for business study and growth.
• Establish documentation standards to ensure consistent naming, clear definitions, and formal documentation for all APIs, datasets, metrics, and columns.
• Build analytical foundations, including cohorts, funnels, growth metrics, and benchmarks, to enable accurate growth analysis for merchants and internal teams.
• Guard data quality and consistency by defining validation rules, reconciliation checks, and metric governance.
• Act as the analytical authority for the platform layer, advising engineering, product, and other analytics teams on correct implementation.

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in data science or analytics engineering, with at least 2 years in a senior or ownership-level role.
• Proven experience in building or governing metrics layers and semantic models (*, dbt, LookML, or equivalent) used by multiple teams.
• Strong proficiency in SQL and Python, with deep comfort working directly with warehouse-level data (*, BigQuery, Clickhouse, Redshift).
• Experience designing customer- or merchant-facing analytics products, such as dashboards, embedded reports, or analytics APIs.
• A strong instinct for naming conventions, documentation, and standards, recognizing their importance as product features.
• Demonstrated experience partnering with product managers to translate business questions into governed, reusable data models.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to align multiple teams around a single source of truth.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience within e-commerce or SaaS platforms, particularly with merchant or seller analytics.
• Familiarity with metric stores or semantic layers at scale (*, Cube, dbt Semantic Layer, Metriql).
• Experience defining API contracts and data documentation practices (*, data catalogs, OpenAPI specs, column-level lineage).
• Statistical modeling or forecasting experience applied to growth analytics.
• Arabic language proficiency.
