The Role: Archaeological Project Manager

Chronicle Heritage Arabia is seeking an Archaeological Project Manager to join its team. This full-time, remote position involves leading and delivering heritage assessment and management projects throughout the Middle East. The role requires overseeing heritage projects from planning through completion, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing fieldwork, reporting, and post-excavation teams, and coordinating with stakeholders in Saudi Arabia and other territories. Periodic travel to the region for site visits or stakeholder meetings is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage multiple archaeology and heritage projects across the project lifecycle, adhering to agreed budgets, scopes, and timescales.
• Ensure Health and Safety compliance, particularly regarding heat-stress management, to deliver archaeological projects safely and in line with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and core values.
• Assign tasks, set deadlines, and monitor progress for project teams.
• Provide technical oversight for archaeological fieldwork, reporting, and post-excavation work, and review deliverables for quality assurance.
• Ensure projects comply with national and local cultural heritage regulations.
• Coordinate logistics, staffing, and subcontractor management.
• Manage the preparation and submission of required permits and reports.
• Track project expenses and ensure financial efficiency.
• Manage resources effectively to optimize productivity.
• Report on project financials and status updates to senior management.
• Develop and maintain working relationships with existing clients, the wider Chronicle Heritage team, development bodies, government agencies, and other stakeholders, in collaboration with the Operations Principal and Regional Principal.
• Support and mentor fieldwork staff, demonstrating strong leadership and technical expertise.
• Ensure compliance with commercial and operational governance processes and Standard Operating Procedures, managing risks appropriately.

Qualifications and Experience

• Essential:
  • Degree in Archaeology or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in archaeological fieldwork.
  • Proven project management experience delivering multiple archaeological projects simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of archaeological excavation and post-excavation, in line with relevant standards and guidance.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and report-writing skills in English.
  • Ability to manage remote and cross-cultural teams effectively.
• Desirable:
  • Project management or safety qualifications (*, APM, NEBOSH).
  • Arabic language skills and/or regional experience in the Middle East.
