Job Purpose

The Senior Specialist, Industrial Hygiene is responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards associated with gold mining activities. This full-time role focuses on ensuring that worker exposure to physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards is identified, monitored, and controlled in adherence to regulatory requirements, company standards, and industry best practices. The primary objective is to prevent occupational illness and safeguard workforce health.

Key Accountabilities

  • Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment: Identify and assess occupational health hazards across mining and processing operations, including respirable dust (silica, diesel particulate matter), noise and vibration, heat stress, chemical exposures (cyanide, mercury, reagents, explosives fumes), and biological and ergonomic risks. Conduct baseline and periodic health risk assessments for new and existing processes, equipment, and projects.
  • Exposure Monitoring & Sampling: Develop and implement industrial hygiene monitoring programs, including personal and area dust sampling, noise surveys and dosimetry, heat stress assessments, and chemical exposure monitoring. Manage sampling strategies, calibration, chain of custody, and laboratory coordination. Analyze and trend exposure data to identify emerging risks and prioritize controls.
  • Control Measures & Program Implementation: Recommend and verify the effectiveness of engineering, administrative, and PPE controls. Support design reviews for ventilation, dust suppression, enclosure systems, and process changes. Participate in contractor and project reviews to ensure occupational health risks are adequately controlled.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Liaison: Ensure compliance with mining and occupational health regulations (*, MSHA/OSHA or equivalent national authorities). Support regulatory inspections, audits, and reporting related to occupational health and hygiene. Maintain legally defensible IH records, exposure registers, and reports.
  • Training & Awareness: Develop and deliver industrial hygiene and occupational health training, including induction, refresher, and toolbox talks. Educate workers and supervisors on health risks, exposure pathways, early symptoms, and protective measures. Promote proactive health risk reporting and hazard awareness at all operational levels.
  • Data Management & Reporting: Manage industrial hygiene databases and software systems (*, exposure monitoring systems, dashboards). Prepare technical reports, trend analyses, and management summaries for leadership review. Provide input into occupational health KPIs, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives, information, and expert advice.
  • Incident & Health Surveillance Support: Support investigations related to overexposure, occupational illnesses, and health complaints. Coordinate with medical and occupational health providers on surveillance outcomes and corrective measures. Provide expert input during emergencies or abnormal exposure events.

Experience Required

Candidates should possess 2-5 years of relevant experience in industrial hygiene, preferably within mining or heavy industry settings.
