Role Overview: Specialist - Workshop

The Specialist - Workshop, with a primary focus on welding, is a full-time, hands-on leadership position responsible for overseeing workshop operations. This role involves leading workshop personnel, allocating tasks, monitoring quality, and ensuring all jobs are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule. The Specialist will manage the welding team, maintain material availability, and provide support for both operational and administrative functions within the workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise daily welding and fabrication workshop activities.
  • Lead and manage welding personnel, including task allocation and performance monitoring.
  • Ensure all welding operations adhere to specified drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Monitor and maintain stock levels of welding consumables and steel materials, coordinating ordering to prevent shortages.
  • Inspect welding work to ensure quality assurance and compliance with established protocols.
  • Identify structural damage and recommend appropriate repair methods.
  • Provide training to the welding team on various welding techniques and machinery, including CNC machines.
  • Support documentation, reporting, and coordination efforts between the workshop and office.
  • Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to continuously improve fabrication and welding processes.
  • Cover for Supervisors of other teams as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • Boiler making Plating / Welding Trade certificate.
  • Over 5 years of proven experience as a Welder/Fabricator.
  • Prior experience supervising or leading workshop personnel is required.
  • Experience preferably within construction, heavy plant, equipment rental, transport, or industrial workshops.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong practical welding and fabrication skills.
  • Ability to carry out structural repairs and modifications.
  • Practical knowledge of industrial painting and surface preparation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Practical knowledge of mechanical repairs and general plant maintenance.
