The Role: Environmental Specialist

Dar Massader is seeking a full-time Environmental Specialist to join its team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This role is central to supporting compliance and monitoring activities across various environmental projects. The specialist will be responsible for conducting ecological field surveys, assessing biodiversity and habitat impacts, and implementing mitigation measures to ensure sustainable project operations and promote biodiversity conservation throughout project life cycles.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform detailed field surveys for terrestrial flora, fauna, avifauna, and habitat conditions, including species identification, health assessment, documentation of abundance and life stages, and habitat mapping.
• Apply recognized scales (*, DAFOR, SACFOR) for assessing species abundance and conservation status, utilizing IUCN Red List and High Conservation Priority species designations.
• Conduct baseline and ongoing assessments to determine potential impacts on habitats and biodiversity during project construction, operation, and decommissioning phases, focusing on disturbances to soil composition, water quality, and air quality.
• Collaborate with project teams to implement specific mitigation actions outlined in Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), including practices to reduce soil erosion, prevent species disturbance, minimize noise, and control air and water pollution.
• Prepare comprehensive environmental impact reports, incorporating baseline findings, field survey results, and ecological assessments, and develop actionable recommendations to support the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP).
• Participate in post-construction assessments, recommending actions for habitat restoration, soil stabilization, and vegetation re-establishment in natural landscapes impacted by project activities.
• Collaborate with regulatory agencies, local communities, and stakeholders, providing project updates and addressing environmental concerns to ensure adherence to international environmental standards (*, IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles) and national regulations (*, NCEC rules).
• Record, analyze, and manage environmental data using appropriate tools and software, maintaining organized records of ecological surveys, stakeholder communications, and compliance documentation to support reporting and project transparency.

Role Objectives and Impact

The primary objective of this role is to ensure regulatory compliance across all project phases. The Environmental Specialist will support sustainable project operations and actively promote biodiversity conservation throughout the entire project life cycle, from initial assessment through decommissioning. This involves translating collected data into actionable insights and ensuring environmental best practices are integrated into all project activities.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates for this position should possess 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in environmental management, ecological surveying, or a related field. A strong understanding of environmental regulations, impact assessment methodologies, and biodiversity conservation principles is required. Practical experience in conducting field surveys and preparing detailed environmental reports is essential.

Compliance and Stakeholder Engagement

This role requires active engagement with various stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, local communities, and internal project teams. The Environmental Specialist will be instrumental in ensuring that all project activities meet both national regulations, such as NCEC rules, and international environmental standards, including IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles. Effective communication and data management are key to maintaining transparency and compliance.
