About the Role
Bupa Arabia is seeking a Technician Ophthalmology to join its team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position plays a critical role in supporting ophthalmologists and other eye care professionals in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with eye-related conditions. The role requires a combination of technical skills, knowledge of ophthalmic procedures, and a patient-centered approach to healthcare.
Patient Care and Clinical Support
- Perform preliminary ophthalmic diagnostic tests and screenings, such as visual acuity testing, tonometry, visual field testing, and refraction, following established protocols and guidelines.
- Prepare patients for eye examinations and procedures, explaining the process, obtaining relevant medical history, and ensuring their comfort.
- Conduct specialized ophthalmic tests including optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual field testing, fluorescein angiography, and ultrasound imaging to assist in diagnosing and monitoring eye conditions.
- Assist with contact lens fittings, measurements, and provide instructions for patients requiring contact lenses.
- Triage patients based on the urgency of their eye conditions, ensuring prompt attention for acute issues.
- Administer eye drops, ointments, or medications as directed by the ophthalmologist, and educate patients on proper administration techniques.
- Support ophthalmologists during eye exams, procedures, and treatments by assisting with instruments, equipment setup, patient positioning, and other tasks as needed.
Patient Education and Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Assess patient educational needs and interact with relevant staff and departments to facilitate requirements.
- Provide patients with information on eye conditions, treatment options, medications, and post-care instructions to promote understanding and compliance.
- Offer emotional support and guidance to patients and families during challenging times.
- Ensure patients understand discharge instructions and follow-up care.
- Schedule follow-up appointments, coordinate referrals to other specialists, and communicate test results and treatment plans under the supervision of the ophthalmologist.
- Work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure seamless transitions of care and optimal patient outcomes.
Documentation, Safety, and Quality Assurance
- Record test results, patient information, treatment plans, and other relevant data accurately in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements regarding patient documentation and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Maintain ophthalmic equipment in proper working condition, ensuring cleanliness and regular calibration for accurate test results and patient safety.
- Adhere to strict infection control protocols to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections.
- Implement safety measures to protect patients, staff, and visitors, and identify and report defective equipment, safety hazards, and environmental hazards.
- Participate in quality assurance activities, including monitoring equipment cleanliness, ensuring infection control, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to patient complaints and concerns, initiating the nursing or administrative chain of command if unable to resolve patient issues.
- Assist the Head Nurse of the unit by accepting other work-related responsibilities as assigned.

- Seek opportunities for professional growth and skill development through workshops, seminars, and certifications.
- Demonstrate and maintain competence in all mandatory competencies.

Qualifications and Experience
- 0-1 year of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge of ophthalmic procedures.
- Ability to apply a patient-centered approach to healthcare.
- Current licensure and certifications pertinent to the role.
