About KAUST

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), located in Thuwal, Makkah, is seeking a full-time HPC Computational Scientist. This role is crucial for supporting advanced research and enablement activities within the university's high-performance computing environment, contributing to scientific and engineering advancements.

Role Overview

The HPC Computational Scientist will provide expert support for internally developed codes on KAUST's high-performance computing (HPC) systems, specifically on Shaheen III CPUs and GPUs partitions. This position encompasses a broad range of support for users of laboratory systems and their software applications, with a focus on optimizing performance and facilitating diverse research objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert support for compiling, running, debugging, and optimizing internally developed codes on HPC systems.
  • Support research and enablement activities on KSL HPC systems in computational science and engineering, big data analysis, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
  • Offer expertise in HPC applications and libraries installation, porting, and performance tuning for efficient execution on CPU and GPU architectures.
  • Develop, deliver, update, and support training, user documentation, and internal documentation.
  • Develop HPC applications and software tools as necessary to support research enablement on KSL HPC clusters and supercomputers.
  • Install, port, and tune high-performance applications, tools, and data analysis software stacks.
  • Develop software tools and parallel application libraries to support research projects within cluster systems and subsystems.
  • Develop software application benchmarks for periodic upgrades of laboratory systems.

User Engagement and Support

  • Work closely with end users, including faculty, researchers, and collaboration partners, to achieve their research objectives in collaborative projects.
  • Provide timely user support via telephone, walk-in, email, and ticketing systems for all types of inquiries.
  • Maintain high customer service standards when addressing user issues and questions.
  • Review and prepare documentation for systems, tests, and software installations.
  • Provide individual and/or group instruction and training on topics of interest to the user community.

Required Experience and Expertise

Candidates for this role should possess 5-10 years of experience in a relevant field. The position requires a strong background in computational science and engineering, big data analysis, artificial intelligence/machine learning, or related areas, with practical expertise in HPC application optimization and software development.

  • Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art computer technology, equipment, and systems, supporting benchmarking activities for future procurements.
