About the Role

Saudi Gold Refinery Co. is seeking a VAT Specialist to join its team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position focuses on managing the company’s Value Added Tax compliance and reporting obligations, ensuring accurate tax treatment for refining operations, bullion sales, and procurement activities in alignment with ZATCA regulations. The role requires a deep understanding of VAT complexities related to precious metals, including reverse charge mechanisms and export zero-rating, to maintain the company’s tax integrity.

Role Context and Reporting

Reporting directly to the Finance Manager, the VAT Specialist will be instrumental in upholding robust tax controls and optimizing cash flow through effective VAT refund management. This position demands a proactive stance towards evolving regulatory landscapes and close collaboration with operational departments to ensure seamless tax integration into business processes. The ideal candidate will possess 5-10 years of relevant experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and submit accurate monthly and quarterly VAT returns to ZATCA, adhering to statutory deadlines and regulatory requirements.
• Validate all input tax credit claims against valid tax invoices, ensuring eligibility for deduction.
• Analyze sales transactions to correctly apply zero-rating for exports and exempt status for investment gold.
• Monitor the generation of electronic invoices to ensure compliance with ZATCA Phase 2 technical standards and resolve integration errors.
• Prepare detailed audit files and respond to ZATCA or external auditor inquiries with precise documentation.
• Reconcile the VAT control account in the General Ledger with filed returns and bank statements monthly.
• Identify inefficiencies in tax workflows and implement process improvements or automation.
• Advise Procurement and Sales departments on VAT implications of new contracts and customer classifications.
• Manage the submission and follow-up of VAT refund claims to optimize working capital.
• Track updates to Saudi tax laws and ZATCA guidelines, assessing their impact and updating internal policies.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Law from a recognized university.
• Minimum of 5 years of VAT compliance experience, with at least 3 years in Saudi Arabia.
• In-depth knowledge of Saudi VAT Law, Implementing Regulations, and ZATCA guidelines.
• Proven experience with the ZATCA GAZT portal for filing returns and managing tax disputes.
• Strong proficiency in Excel for data analysis, reconciliation, and reporting.
• Experience handling VAT for industrial, manufacturing, or trading companies.
• Fluency in English is required; professional proficiency in Arabic is preferred.
• Ability to work under pressure and consistently meet strict statutory deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the mining, refining, or precious metals industry.
• SOCPA membership or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
• Experience with SAP S/4HANA or Oracle ERP systems.
• Knowledge of customs duties and their interaction with VAT.
• Certified Tax Agent registration with ZATCA.

Performance Expectations

Success in this role will be measured by key performance indicators including 100% on-time submission of VAT returns with zero penalties, zero adjustments or fines from ZATCA audits, timely monthly VAT reconciliations, successful clearance of pending VAT refund claims, 100% compliance with ZATCA Phase 2 e-invoicing technical requirements, a 20% year-over-year reduction in manual tax adjustment entries, and positive feedback from internal stakeholders on tax advisory support.
