About the Role
Bureau Veritas is seeking a Fire Assay Laboratory Technician to join our team in the Minerals Laboratory. This full-time position is based in South Jeddah, within the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia, and reports directly to the Production Manager.
Role Purpose
The Fire Assay Laboratory Technician is responsible for executing a comprehensive range of fire assay procedures, ensuring accurate analysis of samples and precious metals. This role involves critical steps from initial sample preparation through to final concentration calculations, maintaining high standards of quality and safety within the laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately weigh samples and metal materials.
- Mix samples with litharge inside extraction cupboards.
- Load prepared samples into crucibles and melt them in furnaces.
- Pour controlled quantities of molten material into moulds.
- Move materials safely using a hand-held pump truck.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised furnace and assay area.
- Perform cupellation to separate precious metals.
- Clean, prepare, and weigh lead buttons.
- Prepare flux mixtures, including litharge, borax, soda ash, and silica.
- Operate and control muffle furnace temperatures.
- Collect and polish precious-metal beads.
- Weigh gold/silver beads using microbalances.
- Calculate precious-metal concentrations based on bead and sample weights.
- Run blanks, duplicates, and standards to ensure accuracy and quality control.
- Document each step from sample receipt to final reporting.
Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Compliance
- Implement Bureau Veritas safety programs within the team.
- Comply at all times with all applicable legal requirements, BV HSE Policies, procedures, and practices.
- Maintain personal work areas tidy and hazard-free, reporting any deviation, fault, or hazard immediately to the location manager, line manager, or HSE Representative.
- Report immediately to the HSE Representative any newly identified hazard and participate in devising suitable operational controls to eliminate or minimise pertinent risks.
- Report immediately to the HSE Representative any HSE incident and cooperate in its investigation.
- Report all incidents and take action whenever an unsafe act or condition is observed.
- Take responsibility for personal health and safety, and that of others who may be affected by work activities.
- Co-operate with others on health and safety matters, and not interfere with or misuse anything provided for health, safety, or welfare.
Experience Requirements
- A minimum of 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in a fire assay laboratory setting.
