About the Role

Sheraton Hotels & Resorts is seeking a Director of Engineering for its property in Medina, Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah. This full-time position requires a professional with extensive knowledge of property maintenance and a proven ability to manage multiple buildings, grounds, and physical plants. The role is responsible for ensuring safety, security, and asset protection, while also overseeing budget management, capital expenditure projects, preventative maintenance, and energy conservation initiatives. The successful candidate will develop and implement strategies to meet or exceed guest and employee expectations and maximize financial performance, while adhering to all standards and regulatory requirements. This role also involves leading the emergency response team for facility-related issues.

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Engineering will manage the overall engineering operations and associated budgets. This includes overseeing the physical plant, encompassing equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, and electrical systems, in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. The role involves administering service contracts, ensuring the fire crew is fully trained on all procedures and equipment, and coaching the engineering leadership team to effectively manage controllable expenses such as wages, utilities, supplies, and vendor agreements. Key duties also include managing heat, light, and power consumption, developing an engineering operating strategy aligned with the property's business strategy, and ensuring departmental goals are integrated into unit game plans. The position requires oversight of long-term preventative maintenance and asset protection plans, review of financial reports to track performance against budget, and proactive identification and resolution of potential issues.

Maintaining Engineering Standards and Profitability

This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all state, local, and federal regulations, and maintaining property life safety systems, including fire fighting equipment, sprinkler systems, and alarm systems. The Director of Engineering will ensure all building and equipment licenses, permits, and certifications are current. Furthermore, the position involves managing operational areas to budget by reviewing operating statements and payroll reports, monitoring and managing payroll functions, and controlling departmental expenses to achieve or exceed budgeted goals. Participation in the development of capital expenditure goals and management of related projects is also required, along with preparing P&L critiques and understanding the impact of departmental operations on overall property financial goals.

Human Resources and Team Management

The Director of Engineering will ensure employees are treated fairly and equitably, and that disciplinary procedures and documentation are completed according to Standard and Local Operating Procedures. Utilizing employee feedback and an open-door policy to address concerns in a timely manner is essential. The role includes celebrating team successes through public recognition and resolving guest problems and complaints, escalating issues to Human Resources as necessary. Regular, ongoing communication within the engineering operation is required to discuss daily activities, set expectations, and raise awareness of business objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED along with 6 years of experience in engineering and maintenance or a related professional area, including technical training in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing. Alternatively, a 2-year degree from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a related major, combined with 4 years of experience in engineering and maintenance or a related professional area and technical training in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing, will be considered. The required experience level for this role is between 5-10 years.
