About the Welding Specialist Role

Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP) is seeking a Welding Specialist to join their team in Al Jubail, Eastern Region. This full-time position requires 5-10 years of experience and focuses on ensuring the quality and compliance of all welding activities within the company's operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and approve contractor welding procedures, welder qualifications, heat treatment procedures, testing procedures, personnel qualifications, and inspection equipment calibration for new projects, repairs, and alterations on static equipment and piping.
  • Ensure the timely and effective implementation of welding inspection activities.
  • Lead technical problem resolution for welding-related issues in the field and shops.
  • Perform technical audits of welding activities at site and contractor facilities.
  • Ensure welding activities comply with Company specifications, procedures, and international standards.
  • Manage contractor welding quality and ensure welders are experienced and adequately certified.
  • Provide welding consultancy and technical assistance during normal operations, Turnarounds, and Shutdowns.
  • Review and approve Material Test Certificates for new materials.
  • Review technical queries, deviation requests, and requests for NDT in-lieu.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate special welding repairs for Company assets.
  • Lead investigations for welding-related failures and provide engineering solutions.
  • Validate and maintain reports issued by Area Inspectors for weld metal and base metal testing.
  • Support Area Inspectors in defining appropriate welding repair procedures.
  • Review Management of Change (MOC), waivers, or technical queries involving welding activities.
  • Review and approve Inspection & Test Plans for new static equipment and piping.

Technical Oversight and Development

This role is responsible for the continual update of Company standards and the development of procedures for welding activities, ensuring alignment with the latest international standards. The Welding Specialist will provide technical recommendations for new facilities and modifications involving welding, reviewing project proposals and plans from a welding perspective to enhance design effectiveness and compliance. They will also be involved in the detailed assessment of failures in static equipment and piping, providing recommendations for weld repair in accordance with applicable codes and best engineering practices to ensure equipment fitness for service and safe operation.

Inspection and Quality Assurance

The Welding Specialist will perform surveillance inspections through frequent site and shop visits/audits to ensure the quality of welding activities and resolve related issues. They will be solely responsible for the review and approval of welding and heat treatment documentation and weld testing activities. Involvement in the review of Failure Analysis Reports and participation in Root Cause Analysis of failures to provide welding expertise are also key aspects of this position. Additionally, the role involves reviewing Non-Conformity Reports to provide corrective actions in the field of welding.

Team Leadership and Support

During Turnarounds and Shutdowns, the Welding Specialist will lead and manage welding inspectors to support Area Inspectors. They will also support management as required in legal disputes related to welding activities, providing evaluation and results. The role requires receiving work directions and instructions from the Inspection Superintendent and reporting on activity progress. Other related duties as assigned by the Inspection Superintendent will also be undertaken.

Qualifications and Experience

This position requires a minimum of 5 years and up to 10 years of relevant experience in welding inspection and specialization. The candidate must demonstrate a strong understanding of welding procedures, materials, testing, and international standards applicable to static equipment and piping.
