About the Role
ADES Holding Company is seeking a Barge Engineer to join its team in Al Khobar. This full-time role requires 5-10 years of experience and involves comprehensive oversight of all marine activities onboard, ensuring safety, environmental compliance, and operational efficiency.
The Barge Engineer is responsible for supervising and coordinating critical marine operations, including safety protocols, firefighting equipment, lifting operations, rig moves, jacking system operations, stability and ballast controls, and helicopter operations. This position also encompasses the maintenance and certification of all marine equipment and managing the rig to ensure adherence to applicable rules, codes, regulations, and industry best practices, prioritizing personnel, environmental, and equipment safety.
Rig Move and Stability Operations
- Supervise and arrange rig move preparations, including stability calculations for jacking, floating, and preloading, ensuring compliance with preparation checklists.
- Monitor weather forecasts for rig move windows and review soil condition reports to anticipate expected penetration.
- Ensure jacking systems, motors, drilling packages, and cantilevers are maintained, secured, and ready for operation.
- Confirm availability, maintenance, readiness, and certification of towing equipment and mooring winches.
- Participate in rig move meetings, maintain associated records and move history, and conduct watertight integrity checks.
- Assure daily accurate rig loading, leg reactions, fuel/water supplies, and centers of gravity remain within design limits for safe operation.
- Calculate daily load criteria to meet operational and stability requirements, ensuring deck loading aligns with rig design and operation manuals.
Lifting Operations and General Duties
- Supervise and direct all cargo loading, unloading, and movement, including critical and complex lifting operations and personnel transfer.
- Direct deck crew in moving/loading/unloading critical items, considering unit load distribution for the security of lifted items and personnel.
- Liaise and cooperate with the drilling crew to ensure safe and smooth operations, assigning crew members to drilling operations as required.
- Oversee housekeeping to ensure work areas are clean, orderly, and hazard-free, directing debris disposal according to company hazardous material and waste management policies.
Compliance, Maintenance, and Emergency Response
- Serve as part of the Rig’s Emergency Response Team, ensuring personnel are instructed in applicable emergency procedures and that well control and general safety drills are held and recorded.
- Prepare for and participate in various inspection and survey activities in accordance with Class, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain the unit’s statutory certification and records as required by Class, Flag, IMO STCW convention, and other mandatory regulations.
- Monitor preventive maintenance for marine, helideck, navigation, firefighting, and lifesaving equipment, ensuring timely execution and certification of all lifting equipment.
- Liaise with the OIM and Maintenance Department to incorporate maintenance/repairs and address outstanding Class and audit recommendations.
- Prepare annual hull and tank painting plans and review completion quarterly.
- Ensure helicopter operations are conducted safely, adhering to aviation authorities, standards, and regulations, and maintain valid helideck certification.
Team Leadership and Development
- Provide clear instructions to the team regarding duties, responsibilities, and necessary safety precautions prior to commencing work.
- Mentor, develop, and train team members to ensure safe and effective operations.
- Identify opportunities for skill and career advancement, supporting the professional growth of the team.
- Ensure the team receives required training through on-the-job instruction, classroom sessions, and participation in safety drills and exercises.
- Evaluate team performance with constant and fair feedback, identify areas for improvement, and drive the ADVANCE process for formal performance management.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Experience: 5-10 years in a relevant marine engineering or offshore role.
- Certifications: As per ADES Training Matrix. A Valid Certificate of Competency from a Maritime Academy is mandatory for self-propelled units.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to occasionally climb (stairs, ladders) and walk, with flexibility to work day/night shifts.
