Role Overview
Baker Hughes is seeking a Machinery Diagnostics Field Engineer to join our team in Dhahran, Eastern. This full-time role involves providing comprehensive service solutions for critical rotating machinery assets, including their protection and monitoring systems, to customers. The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in machinery diagnostics field services.
Key Responsibilities
The Machinery Diagnostics Field Engineer provides technical leadership and assistance to customers, users, and other field personnel in the diagnostic and long-term maintenance of Bently Nevada equipment and customer rotating machinery. This includes performing installations, commissioning, and troubleshooting of hardware and software products, as well as evaluating machinery condition through rotor dynamic analysis and delivering diagnostics training after certification.
Specific Duties
- Provide leadership, technical direction, and assistance to customers, users, and other field personnel for the diagnostic and long-term maintenance of Bently Nevada equipment and customer rotating machinery.
- Perform installations, commissioning, and troubleshooting of Bently Nevada Hardware and Software Products and Solutions at customer locations.
- Diagnose machinery problems based on available data, including vibration, process, performance data, maintenance records, and customer communications.
- Complete timely standard service reports with documentation of findings and recommendations.
- Respond to customer-required travel promptly, ensuring all necessary service equipment is brought.
- Identify proper installation of permanently installed transducers and monitors, and install transducers as required.
- Properly install temporary shaft, casing, optical, and laser-based transducers to acquire additional machinery data.
- Professionally use MDS data acquisition instruments, including ADRE408, Scout, and System 1®, to acquire field data.
- Successfully extract machinery data plots from MDS data acquisition instruments and System 1®.
- Recognize and evaluate the overall quality of machinery vibration data, distinguishing between good and bad data.
- Recognize and quantify the severity of machinery vibration data in accordance with applicable industry standards (*, API, ISO).
- Perform field-balancing of critical machinery such as steam and gas turbines, generators, compressors, and pumps.
- Conduct simple two-channel impact tests using an impact hammer and an appropriate accelerometer to determine natural frequencies of structures, rotors, piping, and machinery support systems.
- Perform and interpret Operating Deflection Shapes (ODS) and basic modal analysis.
- Collect data for torsional analysis.
- Adhere to BH HSE standards at all work sites and conduct fieldwork in compliance with all applicable regulations and customer requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate engineer from an accredited institution with a minimum 4-year technical degree. A BSc or MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Machinery Diagnostics Services Field Services.
- Certificate as a Vibration Analyst level 3 or higher from an accredited Institute is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with mechanical vibration, rotating machinery vibration and diagnostics, rotor dynamic analysis, machinery balancing, and alignment.
- Ability to interpret and understand machinery mechanical and electrical system drawings and specifications.
- Valid driving license and passport.
- Strong command of oral and written communication in English, including formal presentations.
Desired Skills and Attributes
- Previous background in Systems & Instrumentation work, operating plant experience, OEM experience, or an industrial co-op program is highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to influence others and lead small teams.
- Ability to lead initiatives of moderate scope and impact.
- Ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously.
- Effective problem identification and solution skills.
- Proven analytical and organizational ability.
Work Environment and Travel
This role requires availability to travel up to 70% of the time, as needed, within the geographic region, often with short notice. The successful candidate must be willing to work at customer plant sites for extended hours and be capable of working in arduous temperature environments, at heights, and performing all tasks while wearing required Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). The position also demands the physical strength and agility necessary to meet job requirements.
