About Saudi Gold Refinery and the Role
Saudi Gold Refinery Co. (SGR) is a Saudi mining and precious-metals company specializing in the refining of gold and precious metals, bullion production, and value-added services. Operating within the Kingdom’s mining value chain, SGR aligns with Vision 2030 and adheres to regulatory frameworks set by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources (MIM), along with applicable Saudi and international standards. We produce responsibly sourced, traceable, and certified bullion, operating to LBMA Good Delivery and ISO-aligned quality standards.
SGR is seeking a Chemical Engineer to join our team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position is ideal for candidates with 0-1 years of experience, focusing on optimizing wet chemical refining processes and ensuring technical accuracy within our assay laboratory.
Role Purpose and Contribution
The Chemical Engineer will play a key role in maximizing metal recovery rates from dore bars and recyclable feedstocks, while strictly adhering to safety and environmental regulations. Reporting directly to the Lab Manager, this position supports SGR’s contribution to the Kingdom’s mining value chain by ensuring the production of LBMA-grade bullion through rigorous chemical control. The role requires a proactive approach to process safety, chemical inventory management, and continuous improvement in refining efficiency, including troubleshooting process deviations and validating analytical methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Process Optimization: Analyze daily refining data to adjust acid ratios and temperature controls, ensuring maximum gold and silver recovery yields.
- Laboratory Support: Provide technical guidance to lab technicians on wet chemical analyses and troubleshoot instrumental calibration issues.
- Safety Compliance: Conduct regular audits of chemical storage and fume extraction systems to ensure adherence to PTW and LOTO standards.
- Environmental Monitoring: Monitor effluent pH and heavy metal content to ensure discharge limits meet national environmental permits and regulations.
- Documentation Control: Maintain up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all chemical handling and refining processes in the document control system.
- Incident Investigation: Lead root cause analysis for chemical spills or exposure events and implement preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
- Training Delivery: Deliver technical training sessions to operators and lab staff on safe chemical handling and emergency response protocols.
- Inventory Management: Ensure all chemical inventory records are accurate and reconciled monthly to support supply chain planning and security.
- Audit Preparation: Prepare technical reports for internal audits and external regulatory inspections by MIM and SASO officials.
- Cost Reduction: Identify opportunities to reduce chemical consumption costs per kilogram of refined metal through process efficiency improvements.
Performance and Success Metrics
- Achieve a measurable increase in overall gold and silver recovery rates through optimized chemical dosing strategies.
- Reduce chemical consumption costs per kilogram of refined metal by at least 5% without compromising quality.
- Successfully lead the closure of all open non-conformities related to chemical handling in the latest ISO 17025 audit.
- Implement an updated suite of SOPs for wet chemical processes that reduces operator error rates by 10%.
- Complete a comprehensive HAZOP review for the refining line and implement all critical safety recommendations.
- Train and certify 100% of lab technicians on new analytical methods introduced during the year.
- Maintain zero recordable incidents related to chemical handling or exposure throughout the performance period.
Qualifications and Experience
- A degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- 0-1 years of professional experience, preferably in a refining, chemical processing, or laboratory environment.
- Understanding of wet chemical refining processes and analytical laboratory operations.
- Familiarity with safety and environmental regulations (*, PTW, LOTO, national environmental permits).
- Knowledge of quality standards such as LBMA Good Delivery and ISO 17025.
