Job Description

About the Role

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Manager Testing & Commissioning Wind Turbine Specialist to join their team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position is responsible for the planning, execution, coordination, and technical assurance of commissioning activities for Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) in utility-scale wind power projects. The role ensures that mechanical, electrical, control, protection, and grid-interface systems of WTGs are commissioned safely, operate reliably, and fully comply with OEM requirements, statutory regulations, and grid codes prior to handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and provide inputs to the engineering team regarding engineering based on experience, grid compliance, WTG controller limits, and machine-specific challenges.
  • Participate in FAT review of WTG control and protection systems where applicable.
  • Develop WTG commissioning procedures, method statements, and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate commissioning sequence planning with EPC, OEM, and grid operator.
  • Supervise and verify the correct completion of mechanical erection, torquing, alignment, lubrication, and electrical installation (LV, MV, transformers, grounding systems).
  • Ensure readiness of auxiliary systems including pitch and yaw drives, hydraulic and lubrication systems, and emergency and service power supplies.
  • Lead pre-energization checks such as insulation resistance tests, grounding continuity, phase sequence, and voltage checks.
  • Coordinate transformer energization and LV/MV energization, execute first grid synchronization, and progressive power ramp-up.
  • Ensure safety compliance during live tests and rotating machinery operation.
  • Validate WTG controller parameters as per grid code and PPC philosophy.
  • Coordinate LVRT/HVRT, frequency ride-through, and reactive capability tests.
  • Verify pitch-based power regulation and ramp-rate control, and confirm correct response to curtailment, trip, and fault conditions.
  • Support trial run, availability tests, and performance acceptance.
  • Review SCADA data, alarms, and event logs.
  • Close commissioning punch points and support COD documentation.
  • Conduct knowledge transfer and basic training for O&M teams.

Testing and Troubleshooting

This role is responsible for commissioning and grid-compliance testing of wind turbine generators according to IEC 61400-1, IEC 61400-21-1, IEC 61400-25, IEC 61400-27-1, IEC 60204-1, UL 6141, and other relevant standards.

Key Commissioning Tests

  • Insulation and dielectric testing of generators and transformers.
  • Protection relay testing (OV/UV, OF/UF, differential, earth fault).
  • Functional testing of pitch, yaw, mechanical brake, emergency stops, and fail-safe systems.
  • Power curve and performance checks.
  • Communication tests with plant SCADA and PPC.

Key Troubleshooting Scope

  • Grid-related trips (voltage/frequency instability).
  • Pitch or yaw control faults.
  • Excessive vibration or temperature alarms.
  • Transformer or converter faults.
  • Communication failures between WTG and PPC.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should possess 5-10 years of relevant experience in wind turbine testing and commissioning.
