About the Role

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH) in Riyadh is seeking a dedicated Neurophysiology Technologist for its Neurophysiology Laboratory. This full-time position involves independently performing a comprehensive range of clinical neurophysiology procedures, ensuring accurate diagnostic information and patient safety across various clinical settings. Candidates should possess 2-5 years of relevant experience in the field.

Key Responsibilities

The Neurophysiology Technologist is responsible for establishing a proper testing environment and executing various neurophysiology procedures. Key duties include:

• Working independently to ensure a proper environment for testing in the laboratory, wards, Emergency Room (ER), or Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
• Obtaining medical history from patients and summarizing relevant data.
• Putting patients at ease and clearly explaining procedures.
• Safely performing auditory, visual, or electrical stimulation of the nervous system.
• Adjusting equipment settings to ensure proper and accurate test results.
• Recognizing and eliminating artifacts to produce meaningful diagnostic information.
• Measuring and applying multiple electrodes precisely, carefully, and securely to predetermined anatomic sites.

Procedural Expertise

The role requires expertise in performing a comprehensive array of neurophysiology procedures for both adult and pediatric patients, tailored to their age, diagnosis, current state, and medical history. These procedures include:

• Digital Video Electroencephalography (EEG) and Long Term Video/Digital Encephalographic monitoring (LTM).
• Visual, Brainstem Auditory, and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials.
• Nerve Conduction Studies, Sleep Studies, Pulse Oximetry, and Autonomic Studies.
• Performing urgent diagnostic tests on critically ill patients in ICUs and the ER on mobile equipment or in the laboratory setting, in coordination with nursing and respiratory therapy personnel.
• Assisting physicians with invasive procedures in Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring, Electrocorticography, and Electromyography.
• Performing complex pre-operative setups with electrodes on multiple anatomic sites.

Patient Care and Monitoring

A critical aspect of this role involves vigilant patient monitoring and ensuring their well-being throughout procedures. Responsibilities include:

• Observing patient reactions clinically and electrographically during testing.
• Noting signs of distress, medical emergencies, or seizures.
• Taking remedial action and notifying nurses and physicians if necessary.
• Monitoring patients with surgically implanted intracranial electrodes and intraoperatively.
• Watching and assessing the quality of neurophysiologic waveforms.
• Following the patient’s systemic and anesthetic state while keeping track of surgical activities.
• Communicating with and providing feedback to the Neurophysiologist as necessary.
• Making preliminary analysis and description of the waveforms or potentials, ensuring they are meaningful and acceptable for physician review.

Operational Duties and Collaboration

Beyond direct patient care, the Neurophysiology Technologist contributes to laboratory operations and quality. This includes:

• Ensuring the safety of patients and the safe operation of equipment.
• Informing supervisors in writing of equipment faults.
• Maintaining the work area and ensuring adequate levels of stocks and supplies in procedure areas.
• Cleaning and disinfecting clinical equipment.
• Participating in the on-call rota for EEG and LTM services.
• Working as a team leader in procedural areas on a rotational basis as assigned.
• Participating in laboratory quality improvement programs.
• Participating in self and others’ education, training, and development.
• Following all Hospital policies and procedures and performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Candidates for this full-time Neurophysiology Technologist position are expected to have 2-5 years of experience in performing clinical neurophysiology procedures. The ability to work independently in various clinical settings (laboratory, wards, ER, ICUs) is essential, alongside a strong understanding of patient safety protocols and equipment operation.
