Alfanar Engineering Services is seeking a GIS Substation Electrical Engineer to join our team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position is for an experienced professional with a minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in the installation, erection, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, overhaul, replacement, and SF6 gas handling of high-voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment.

Role Summary

The primary objective of this role is to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of GIS substations. This involves a range of activities from preventive and corrective maintenance to equipment upgrades, fault diagnosis, and strict adherence to international safety and quality standards. The engineer will work with equipment from major GIS manufacturers.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and perform GIS equipment erection, assembly, alignment, and installation activities.
• Execute pre-commissioning and commissioning tests for GIS bays and associated equipment, ensuring installation quality aligns with OEM specifications and project requirements.
• Coordinate effectively with project teams, contractors, and vendors during installation and commissioning phases.
• Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on GIS equipment.
• Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, insulation, and control system faults within GIS substations.
• Conduct condition assessments and reliability evaluations of GIS assets, preparing maintenance schedules and outage plans to ensure system availability.
• Lead GIS bay extensions, equipment replacement, and retrofit projects, managing the replacement of components such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, and CTs/VTs.
• Ensure minimal outage duration and compliance with safety requirements during all replacement activities.
• Perform SF6 gas handling activities including filling, topping-up, evacuation, filtration, recovery, recycling, and leak detection.
• Monitor SF6 gas quality parameters (moisture, purity, decomposition products) and maintain inventory records and environmental compliance documentation in accordance with international standards.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in the installation, erection, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, overhaul, replacement, and SF6 gas handling of high-voltage GIS equipment.
• Possess strong technical expertise working with major GIS manufacturers, including Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and HD Hyundai Electric.
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex electrical, mechanical, and control system faults.

Technical Testing and Diagnostics

The role requires comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in conducting various GIS tests, including:

• Insulation Resistance (IR)
• Contact Resistance Measurement (CRM)
• Timing Tests
• Partial Discharge (PD) Monitoring
• Gas Quality Analysis
• High Voltage Testing
• Functional and Interlocking Tests

The engineer will be responsible for analyzing test results and recommending appropriate corrective actions based on findings.
