Curriculum Manager – Nautical

BAE Systems Saudi Arabia is seeking a Curriculum Manager – Nautical to join our team in Al Jubail. This full-time role requires over 10 years of experience and involves leading the delivery and development of comprehensive nautical training programs. The successful candidate will manage a multi-disciplined team to ensure high standards of training and compliance with international and national maritime authorities.

Role Overview and Program Management

The Curriculum Manager will oversee the delivery of training programs approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Transport General Authority (TGA), and Saudi Ports Authority (SPA). These programs range from Deck Hand to Chief Mate, VTS Operator, VTS Supervisor, Harbor Pilot, and Master Certificate of Competence. Training is conducted in a purpose-built facility utilizing advanced simulation and emulation techniques. The role involves leading a multi-disciplined team to deliver over 800 hours of training, ensuring high student success rates, maintaining UK MCA and academic awarding body approvals (both UK and KSA), and developing associated curricula as required by the National Maritime Academy (NMA).

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop curricula teams, fostering an industry-focused educational model and embedding Blended Learning across all curriculum areas.
  • Provide direction and inspire direct reports, championing continuous improvement, communication, and empowerment within the team.
  • Support the NMA Head of Commercial Maritime in implementing policies, commercial strategies, and operational planning to meet curriculum provisioning targets.
  • Ensure all courses maintain necessary awarding body approvals and contribute to the development of Quality Management (QMS) and Product Safety Management Systems (PSMS).
  • Oversee the delivery of high-standard teaching and learning, ensuring responsiveness to student needs, professional conduct, and continuous improvement in attainment.
  • Manage student recruitment, retention, disciplinary processes, and academic guidance systems in line with NMA policy.
  • Manage and lead the development and delivery of all Deck curriculum courses, including new bespoke Marine and Ports related commercial programs.
  • Oversee the through-life provision and operation of Ship Simulators and navigation & communication labs, ensuring maintenance and compliance.
  • Lead the development and accreditation of specialized courses such as Advanced Ship and Tug handling, Human Element, Bridge and Crew Resource Management, and Polar Code courses.
  • Manage the development and delivery of all STCW relevant short courses and various tanker, safety, and security training routes.
  • Act as a College Training Record Book (TRB) advisor for Nautical Science students and an AMERC GMDSS coordinator for the NMA.
  • Manage and lead consultancy services for the shipping, port, and offshore industries.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Class 1 Master Mariner certificate, issued by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency or an IMO Whitelist Country, acceptable to the MCA as an equivalent.
  • Over 10 years of operational management experience in curriculum delivery, including effective development, deployment, and leadership of training staff.
  • Significant experience in the planning, development, approval, and delivery of MCA approved Nautical Science core curriculum and underpinning knowledge as per STCW standards.
  • Extensive experience in the planning, development, approval, and delivery of MCA approved STCW short courses.

  • Proficiency in delegating effectively and managing the performance of others.
