About the Role
ENGIE Middle East is seeking a dedicated Shift Engineer to join our team in Al Jubail. This full-time role requires 5-10 years of experience and involves leading the operations shift team to ensure safe and efficient plant operations. The Shift Engineer will be responsible for making accurate and timely decisions regarding plant processes and performance, consulting with the Operations Manager as needed. The position demands a detailed understanding and practical experience with technologies used in modern process plants for power generation and desalinated water production.
Operational Responsibilities
- Provide focused leadership to the shift team to achieve plant performance targets and ensure optimum levels of power and water export as required by the off-taker.
- Coordinate effectively among the operations and maintenance teams for routine, preventive, and predictive maintenance requirements.
- Ensure operations shifts are adequately staffed and that necessary resources are available for the team to operate the Cogen plant safely, reliably, and efficiently.
- Monitor the quality and actions taken on defects and work orders.
- Continuously monitor and analyze equipment operating parameters to predict abnormal conditions early and initiate appropriate action to prevent unscheduled unit or equipment outages.
- Oversee chemical processes, sampling, and water plant control to maintain quality standards, environmental compliance, and safety.
- Raise work orders in the system to report plant defects and follow up on their progress.
- Coordinate with the Senior Shift Engineer and maintenance team to schedule planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
- Prepare and issue safety documentation to ensure safe isolations from the system for planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
- Coordinate and maintain strong liaison with Power, Gas, Sea Water & Water Control Centers regarding Availability Declarations and Requirements Planning.
Safety, Quality, and Environmental Compliance
- Responsible for the Safety Management and Environment Management System where applicable.
- Ensure IMS Compliance and Certification.
- Implement and adhere to all operations-related policies and procedures.
- Prepare safety documents according to JOMEL safety rules standard and be conversant with the Permit to Work (PTW) system.
- Ensure all activities are carried out according to predefined Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and instructions.
- Ensure the shift team is aware of and trained on any revisions or updates to SOPs or instructions.
Team Leadership and Development
- Maintain high standards of management, ethics, and leadership within the team.
- Establish and facilitate training programs for individual development and operational competence.
- Lead the implementation of the performance management process by setting objectives and targets for individuals and conducting periodical reviews.
- Provide support to individuals in achieving set targets whenever necessary.
- Implement lessons learned processes and other activities to foster a learning organization culture.
- Ensure succession planning for key staff members.
- Establish and implement vertical and horizontal communication within the shift team to ensure members are well-informed and engaged with the business.
- Act as a subject matter expert in specialized areas of the plant and deliver training to staff when required.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates for the Shift Engineer position should possess 5-10 years of relevant experience. The role requires a detailed understanding and practical experience of technologies involved in operating modern process plants associated with power generation and the production of desalinated water. Essential skills include excellent communication and leadership abilities, along with the capacity to work under one's own initiative with a high level of drive, energy, and motivation.
Reporting Structure and Accountabilities
The Shift Engineer operates under the general guidance of the Senior Shift Engineer and is empowered to plan and manage their areas of activity within predefined limits. Extraordinary issues outside established policy and procedure are to be referred to the Senior Shift Engineer for approval or further action plans. Key accountabilities for this role include:
- Ensuring smooth running of Shift Operations.
- Compliance with HSE (Audit & Procedural Compliance).
- Adherence to ISO Standards (Audit & Procedural Compliance).
- Achieving Plant Operations Targets.
- Maintaining the Quality of Reports and the Reporting System for all operations-related reports.
