The Role of Lead Nuclear Safety & Environmental Engineer

Worley Parsons is seeking a Lead Nuclear Safety & Environmental Engineer in Al Khobar. This full-time role requires over 10 years of experience and involves providing independent technical leadership and assurance on behalf of the Owner. The position covers nuclear safety, radiation protection, environmental compliance, and emergency preparedness throughout the project lifecycle, from site selection and licensing to design, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead independent nuclear safety reviews and technical assurance activities.
• Review safety case documentation, including PSAR, FSAR, and supporting analyses.
• Ensure the implementation of defence-in-depth and ALARA principles.
• Support the Owner's Nuclear Safety Management System and promote a strong nuclear safety culture.
• Review Environmental Impact Assessments and environmental compliance programs.
• Oversee radiation protection strategies, environmental monitoring, radioactive waste management, and occupational dose optimization.
• Ensure compliance with applicable environmental and radiation protection regulations.
• Lead the development and review of emergency preparedness and response programs.
• Review emergency procedures, severe accident management guidance, and emergency exercises.
• Coordinate with national emergency response organizations and relevant authorities.
• Support nuclear licensing and regulatory submissions, interfacing with the nuclear regulator and international organizations like the IAEA.
• Independently review EPC Contractor deliverables, identify technical risks, and provide recommendations to the Owner.
• Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, Probabilistic Safety Assessments (PSA), commissioning reviews, and operational readiness assessments.
• Provide nuclear safety and environmental oversight during construction and commissioning.
• Review commissioning procedures, witness safety-critical testing, and verify operational readiness before fuel loading.

Compliance and Standards

The role requires ensuring compliance with Saudi Arabian regulatory requirements, IAEA Safety Standards, international best practices, and the Owner's Nuclear Safety Policy. This involves independently reviewing and challenging EPC Contractor deliverables to uphold the highest safety and environmental standards.

Required Experience

• A minimum of 10 years of experience in nuclear safety and environmental engineering is required for this position.
