About Bechtel and the Opportunity

Bechtel Corporation is establishing a new Energy office in Al Khobar, Eastern, Saudi Arabia, intended to be a central hub for engineering excellence in the region. This initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by delivering transformative oil, gas, chemical, and New Energies projects. Bechtel, a well-established employer with 80 years of presence in the Kingdom, is seeking long-term career professionals for full-time positions within this newly established Middle Eastern hub.

Role Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Senior Process Safety Engineer to contribute to a variety of Energy Transition, Oil and Gas, and Petrochemical projects, spanning from conceptual studies and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) to Project Management Consultancy (PMC) and detailed design. The role requires significant knowledge in process safety and loss prevention design across a wide range of technologies, with the ability to address complex risk and safety design issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate process safety work for a global business unit, focusing on FEED and EPC projects in the Oil and Gas industry.
  • Execute major process safety engineering deliverables in accordance with established engineering design criteria and approved procedures.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and review designs, studies, and reports.
  • Coordinate design development with other engineering disciplines, manage workload, and meet schedule deadlines.
  • Review and check the work of subordinate engineers, provide on-the-job training, and contribute to performance evaluations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, supporting multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, and operating effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Review and provide design recommendations for new projects and facility modifications to ensure compliance with process safety and loss prevention codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Develop process safety design basis, spill containment design basis, and fire protection philosophy.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs, and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts, and change orders.
  • Design and check fire water systems, including demand calculations, P&IDs, layouts, and data sheets.
  • Prepare and check fireproofing schedules and diagrams, and fire & gas detection layouts and cause & effect charts.
  • Analyze fire water networks using Pipenet software.
  • Prepare and check hazardous area classification schedules and escape route/safety sign layouts.
  • Conduct safety studies such as HAZID/ENVID, HAZOP, SIL, and QRA.
  • Supervise a small team of process safety engineers.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • University or college degree from an accredited institution in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 10+ years of relevant experience in FEED and Detailed Engineering for Refineries, Petrochemicals, Gas Processing, Utilities & Offsite.
  • Working knowledge of various international codes and standards, including NFPA.
  • Proficiency with process safety software such as PHAST, CANARY, PHAPro, ExSILentia, and Pipenet.
  • Experience in executing Middle Eastern projects, including brownfield experience, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Aramco, Royal Commission, or ADNOC standards and specifications is highly desirable.
  • Experience in reputable EPC companies is preferred.
