About the Consultant Anesthesia Role

National Medical Care (NMC) is seeking a Consultant Anesthesia for a full-time position in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This role involves providing expert consultation and administering anesthesia using a full range of methods and techniques, operating within anesthesia services on a 24-hour basis. The Consultant is responsible for delivering patient care while adhering to professional medical ethics, CBAHI/JCIA standards, hospital medical by-laws, and Ministry of Health regulations, alongside providing effective departmental leadership and maintaining quality plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure superior quality medical treatment, compassion, and understanding for all patients served at NMC Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Provide patient care within the parameters of professional competence as reflected in the scope of clinical privileges and established standards.
  • Administer anesthesia with a full range of agents, methods, and techniques, observing safety standards; advise registrars on anesthesia administration.
  • Maintain appropriate records of all patients receiving anesthesia, based on monitoring prior to, during, and after administration.
  • Discuss high anesthetic risks with concerned consultants, explain expected outcomes to patients/legal guardians, and obtain required consent.
  • Interview patients scheduled for surgery to assess, develop an anesthesia care plan, and establish rapport.
  • Monitor patients post-operatively to evaluate recovery, assess complications, and make recommendations as indicated.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on patients within the range of the specialty and provide consultations to other medical specialties.
  • Participate in the departmental on-call rota for patient care and admission, responding to emergencies related to the specialty.
  • Uphold patient rights of security, confidentiality, and privacy, ensuring accurate, timely, and legible completion of medical records.
  • Supervise assigned junior staff and maintain appropriate documentation on controlled drugs for the division.
  • Provide leadership for performance improvement functions in the measurement, assessment, and improvement of clinical and non-clinical processes.
  • Actively participate in Continued Medical Education (**** through hospital activities and national/international meetings.
  • Participate in training programs for junior medical staff and in-service training for nursing staff and technicians.
  • Educate patients and families as per their needs, involving them in the plan of care and respecting their goals and choices, with appropriate documentation.
  • Clinical duties will account for 75% of the role.

Reporting Structure and Collaboration

The Consultant Anesthesia reports directly to the Head of Department. This role involves supervising Registrars and Residents within the Department of Anesthesia. Key collaborations include consultants of the same and other specialties, nursing staff, other healthcare professionals, and patients and their families.

Education Requirements

  • Required: American Board, Canadian Fellowship, FFARCS/FRCA, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Desirable: Higher qualifications in the specialty, if applicable.

Experience and Licensing

  • Required: Minimum of five (5) years of experience post-qualification and a current valid license to practice medicine in the area of specialty.
  • Desirable: Additional experience in a sub-specialty, academic affiliation, registration with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, and/or a current license to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia.

Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills.
  • Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable of Medical by-laws.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
