The Role: Director System Safety and Assurance

Mace is seeking a Director System Safety and Assurance to lead integrated teams throughout the project phases. This position involves leading portfolio-wide safety assurance, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and supply-chain partners. The primary objective is to embed compliant strategies, manage key approvals, and support the safe delivery of an integrated, high-performing transport system from its design through to operations. The role is open to discussing part-time, flexible, and hybrid working options if suitable.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement portfolio-wide safety assurance strategies, plans, processes, and tools to support statutory compliance and timely technical approvals.
• Define the safety assurance lifecycle, encompassing verification and validation (V&V), safety risk management, governance, evidence collection, and reporting, aligned with project needs and recognized standards.
• Ensure system safety risks are tolerable and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP), with hazards, Reliability, Availability, Maintainability (RAM) targets, and operational requirements verified and validated prior to acceptance.
• Coordinate independent assurance activities, audits, inspections, risk workshops, and performance monitoring across various projects and suppliers.
• Collaborate with project teams, partners, and authorities to prepare submissions, secure necessary approvals, and deliver compliant safety plans and evidence.
• Build capability through inclusive leadership, coaching, and knowledge sharing, fostering accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement within the team.
• Represent the program with key stakeholders and contribute to industry good practice, emerging trends, and sustainable delivery initiatives.
• Work collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition, sharing responsibility for the proactive identification and management of associated carbon emissions and reductions during work delivery.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with a focus on railway systems safety; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Recognized professional membership and Chartered Engineer status, or an equivalent internationally recognized professional registration.
• A minimum of 20 years of relevant experience across land transport design, construction, and/or operations and maintenance programs.
• At least five years of experience in a senior leadership role within a major-project environment.
• Experience in the Middle East region is advantageous.
• Proven experience in developing and delivering safety assurance evidence within safety-critical transport environments.
• Fulfillment of necessary visa criteria for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and relevant work experience on high-valued projects/programs for a project management consultancy business, as required for immigration and client approval.

Skills and Knowledge

• Strong understanding of smart-city frameworks and sustainable design principles.
• Detailed knowledge of safety performance measures and international benchmarks.
