About the Executive Director Role
Extendicare is seeking an Executive Director to lead a long-term care home in Alberta. This full-time position requires a seasoned and compassionate leader dedicated to ensuring residents receive the highest standard of care. The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall leadership, strategic planning, and operational management of the facility, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, policies, and organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The Executive Director will serve as a strong advocate for resident safety and the continuous advancement of quality care. Key responsibilities include developing a high-performing management team, fostering a positive employee experience to drive engagement, and achieving high resident and family engagement through exceptional care. Financial stewardship, including managing resources and meeting targets, is critical. The role also involves ensuring adherence to provincial legislation, organizational standards, policies, and procedures.
- Overseeing all operations and expenditures, balancing funding streams and meeting accountabilities.
- Ensuring the home operates within budget and driving fiscal accountability across all departments.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support resident and team member well-being.
- Ensuring all safety and care practices comply with relevant Provincial and Federal Acts and Regulations.
- Providing hands-on support to managers, employees, residents, and families.
- Cultivating a culture that enables employees to perform at their best and deliver quality care.
- Developing an exceptional employee experience focused on talent development and succession planning.
- Ensuring the success of Quality Improvement Programs and initiatives.
- Developing home-level strategies to enhance resident care and support organizational goals.
- Employing a customer service mindset, responding to feedback with acknowledgement and empathy.
- Upholding and promoting the organization's Mission, Vision, and Values.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must possess a university degree in Health, Gerontology, Business, Marketing, or Social Services. A minimum of five (5) years of relevant health management experience is required, including expertise in budgeting, operating statement analysis, labour relations, and a thorough understanding of applicable legislation governing long-term care operations. Demonstrated ability to lead and engage a sizeable multidisciplinary team in a unionized environment is essential. A working understanding of business planning processes and the utilization of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is necessary. Experience in risk management and knowledge of continuous quality improvement processes are also required. Candidates must be passionate about promoting a person-centered care philosophy and working with seniors. A Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) completed within the last six months, or willingness to obtain one, is mandatory.

They will possess strong collaboration skills, effective communication abilities, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. An understanding of data analytics and continuous improvement processes is also important.
