Job Description

About the Role

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Manager Testing & Commissioning PV Inverter Specialist for a full-time position in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This role involves providing technical leadership for inverter system commissioning in large-scale solar PV power plants across various projects. The specialist will ensure safe energization, compliance with grid codes, reliable operation, and seamless integration with PPC, SCADA, and grid infrastructure. This position acts as the primary technical lead for inverter systems during commissioning and early operational phases.

Core Responsibilities

The core responsibilities span engineering, pre-commissioning, site execution, grid compliance, and documentation, ensuring comprehensive oversight of inverter systems.

  • Review inverter system drawings, SLDs, protection philosophy, control architecture, and communication diagrams.
  • Provide engineering team inputs on component selection, product performance, inverter limitations, and power quality based on site experience.
  • Validate compliance with local grid codes (*, KSA, DEWA, EWEC, CEA), OEM technical limits, and project-specific control philosophy.
  • Support FAT review of inverter controls and prepare commissioning method statements, test procedures, and risk assessments.
  • Lead inverter pre-energization checks (DC, AC, control, auxiliary) and supervise stepwise energization.
  • Execute first synchronization and power ramp-up, coordinating activities with PPC, SCADA, protection, and grid utility teams.
  • Ensure inverter configuration aligns with PPC commands.
  • Execute and support LVRT/HVRT ride-through tests, power factor/reactive capability tests, ramp rate/power gradient tests, and harmonic/power quality assessments.
  • Support grid acceptance tests and audits, validating inverter operation under existing grid conditions.
  • Prepare commissioning records, test reports, parameter backup files, and develop inverter O&M handover documentation and lessons learned.
  • Support COD and reliability requirements.

Testing and Commissioning Standards

The role is responsible for testing and commissioning grid-connected PV inverters in adherence to international and local standards.

  • Compliance with IEC 62109-1/2, IEC 61727, IEC 62116, IEC 61000 series, UL 1741, and other relevant standards.

Key Commissioning Tests

Key tests performed include ensuring electrical integrity, functional performance, and communication stability.

  • DC insulation resistance and string polarity verification.
  • AC insulation, phase rotation, and grounding continuity.
  • Inverter self-tests and protection validation.
  • Communication stability (Modbus / IEC-104, etc.).
  • Thermal performance under sustained load.

Troubleshooting Responsibilities

The specialist will identify and resolve operational issues to maintain system reliability and performance.

  • Address inverter derating under high temperature or grid disturbance.
  • Resolve nuisance trips due to grid voltage/frequency fluctuation.
  • Correct PPC command mismatches.
  • Investigate DC arc fault / ground fault events.
  • Resolve transformer / RMU interface issues.
  • Conduct root cause analysis using logs, oscillography, and trend data.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should possess significant experience in PV inverter testing and commissioning.

  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in testing and commissioning PV inverters.

Requirements
