About the Service Specialist Role

Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC) is seeking a Service Specialist to join their team. BGC operates over 215 stores across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, focusing on building a supportive community for its employees. This is a part-time position offering on-the-job training, suitable for individuals with 0-1 years of experience.

Role Overview and Responsibilities

The Service Specialist is responsible for maintaining an efficient front end by performing cashier and customer service duties. This role ensures products are stocked, displayed, and rotated correctly to provide a convenient, friendly, and clean shopping experience for the local community. Key responsibilities include accurate checkout processing, maintaining correct cash register counts, and enforcing quality control and food safety standards.

  • Ensuring accurate checkout totals by properly weighing, keying, and scanning items.
  • Maintaining correct money counts in the register.
  • Enforcing quality control and food safety standards, ensuring proper stocking and rotation of dated products.
  • Verifying price accuracy and monitoring product and supply levels for reordering.
  • Unloading trucks and placing delivered items in designated areas.
  • Staying current on tender policies and procedures for various payment methods.
  • Maintaining a friendly and customer service-oriented attitude by greeting customers, answering questions, and responding to complaints.
  • Assisting customers with locating and selecting products.
  • Notifying store management of potential process improvement opportunities.
  • Ensuring the fuel station is maintained properly according to company standards.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary working and shopping environment by adhering to company safety procedures.

Required Skills and Abilities

Candidates should possess fundamental skills relevant to a retail environment. The ability to communicate effectively, multitask in a fast-paced setting, and handle cash transactions accurately is essential. Safety awareness and the ability to follow procedures are also critical.

  • Basic knowledge of cash register operations.
  • Basic knowledge of Workforce Management (WFM).
  • Basic knowledge of on-site fuel station procedures.
  • Ability to count and calculate for cash handling and sales transactions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with customers and colleagues.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to safely work with sharp objects.
  • Ability to operate manual or electric pallet jacks (for individuals 18 years of age or older).
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain department equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Attentiveness to potential hazards and the ability to remedy or report them.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

This role typically involves on-the-job training. Specific certifications are required for certain aspects of the position, particularly related to food handling and fuel operations.

  • On-the-job training is provided.
  • Minimum age of 18 required for operating select machinery.
  • Minimum age of 21 required to drive for Company business, per policy.
  • TABC/LACT/AATC certification required.
  • Food Handler certification required.
  • Fuel Operator C certification required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role requires physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks in various conditions. Work is primarily in a retail store setting, with occasional exposure to different environmental factors.
