Role Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Design Manager to join our team in Al ‘Ulá, Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia. This full-time project-based role focuses on PMC Development across RIBA Stages 1-4. The position requires 5-10 years of experience in a relevant field and offers a tax-free salary. The Design Manager will play a crucial role in supporting PMC Senior Project Managers by overseeing Client-appointed Lead Design Consultants on various development projects.

Role Purpose and Approach

The Design Manager will be actively and directly involved in overseeing design processes, ensuring alignment with project objectives and the PMC Development Framework scope of services. This role demands a structured, systematic, efficient, and disciplined approach, coupled with excellent communication and reporting skills to effectively manage and coordinate design activities from RIBA Stage 1 through Stage 4.

Core Responsibilities

  • Produce scope of works services for tender documentation for Lead Design Consultants (LDC) and other consultancy services, considering Client Framework Agreements and Project Briefs.
  • Oversee Client-appointed LDC activities, coordinating designs across various project stages and elements to meet project objectives.
  • Monitor design progress, LDC deliverables, Client approvals, and statutory approvals/permits.
  • Manage, document, and coordinate stage design reviews, auditing designs for compliance with briefs, risk/value analyses, Quality Management Plans, and HSE Plans.
  • Manage Stakeholder design review and reporting processes, compiling Stage Gateway reports at the conclusion of each RIBA Stage.
  • Review design documents to ensure general accordance with approved versions and identify unauthorized changes impacting project time and cost.
  • Evaluate the necessity and feasibility of potential design changes, assessing their impact on time, cost, and quality, and providing recommendations to the Client.
  • Assist PMC in ensuring LDC Cost Managers collaborate with Client, PMC, Cost consultants, and other parties on cost estimates, value engineering, and constructability studies.
  • Manage design processes in accordance with agreed Client procedures, controlling planning and scheduling, and forecasting design deliverable dates.
  • Review and monitor design progress and independent checking, informing the Client to facilitate approvals and expedite the overall process.
  • Oversee LDC compliance with Value Management requirements and implement Value Engineering exercises in collaboration with the Client's Cost Consultant when instructed.
  • Coordinate with the Client and LDC to establish routine design workshops and progress meetings, ensuring minutes are produced as per PMC obligations.
  • Assist PMC in ensuring 100% completeness of Scope of Work for RFP bidding, including the preparation of Drawings, Specifications, finish schedules, and other Contract Documents by the LDC.
  • Ensure LDC issues monthly Design Progress Reports, covering all Sub-consultant activities. If no LDC is appointed, the PMC (Design Manager) will be responsible for this report.
  • Collaborate with the LDC to identify, list, monitor, and eliminate all design risks throughout various design stages.

Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in design management or a related field, preferably within PMC Development projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with RIBA Stages 1-4.
  • Proven ability to apply a structured, systematic, efficient, and disciplined approach to project oversight.
  • Exceptional communication and reporting skills for effective stakeholder engagement and project documentation.
  • Experience in overseeing Lead Design Consultants and managing design processes, reviews, and approvals.
