Power Cable Specialist

About the Role

Saudi Aramco is seeking a Power Cable Specialist to join the High Voltage Equipment Unit (HVEU) within the Technical Services Division. This full-time role involves providing specialized technical support to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the company's electrical transmission and distribution networks. The Technical Services Division is responsible for delivering highly technical and specialized engineering services for these critical operations.

Role Context and Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to offer expert technical guidance across various aspects of power cables, including design, standards compliance, commissioning, maintenance, operation, and failure investigation. The specialist will contribute to maintaining the integrity and reliability of the power supply infrastructure, ensuring adherence to company standards and industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and validate underground cable designs, including conductor sizing, installation methods, shield grounding, and thermal performance, ensuring compliance with company, national, and industry standards for medium and high-voltage cables.
• Ensure full compliance of the company's cable assets with relevant standards and regulations, covering medium-voltage cables up to 36 kilovolts and high-voltage cables up to 230 kilovolts.
• Provide recommendations on cable routing, clearances, parallel and crossing spacing, and protection methods for cables crossing pipelines, roads, and hazardous areas, applying safety protocols and industry best practices.
• Advise on grounding and bonding strategies for cable shields and sheaths to minimize circulating currents and induced voltages, aligning with company standards and industry guidelines.
• Participate in root cause analysis of cable failures, proposing corrective actions or design improvements to prevent recurrence and enhance system performance.
• Develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures for assessing the condition of power cables.
• Offer consulting and technical guidance to internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders on power cable design, construction practices, and safety protocols.
• Mentor junior engineers and technical staff, supporting internal training and e-learning initiatives focused on underground cable systems.

Qualifications and Experience

• A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required. An advanced degree is considered an advantage.
• Professional Engineering certifications, such as chartership or PE, are preferred.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in the design, development, technical assurance, and health assessment of medium and high voltage (MV/HV) power cables using innovative technologies, with applications from 5kV to 230kV. Experience in the oil and gas, utility, or cable manufacturing industries is a plus.
• Demonstrated knowledge of governing International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards for power cables and accessories, including various insulation, termination, and splicing technologies.
